Louder, heavier, more secure

Of all the lines of JBL portable speakers, the average buyer is most likely to be attracted to the Charge. Compared to the dubious advantages of other series, such as light music or carbines, the JBL Charge's trump card looks more practical - it is a large battery that can be used to charge other devices. Earlier this year, JBL introduced the Charge 3, the fourth model in the lineup. Let's tell you more about it.

What is in the box?

The JBL Charge 3 package is the same as the Charge 2 - a bright orange power supply (5 V; 2.3 A) with replaceable plugs and a micro-USB cable. IPx7 protection eliminates the need for a case

Design

Previous JBL Charge models resembled beer cans. And Charge 3 looks like a junior modification of the JBL Xtreme “barrel”.

In addition to the color presented above, the speaker is also available in black, grey, red and blue. Although the official website states that we received the teal modification, in fact the color is exactly turquoise - turquoise.

The JBL logo stands out in the center of the speaker body, and at the bottom there is a five-position charging indicator, bright and very convenient. Even if you look from above, you can understand the charge level by the reflection from the table surface.

All buttons are placed at the top and symmetrically arranged. From left to right: Bluetooth pairing, volume down, power on, JBL Connect connection, volume up, and track pause.

All connectors are tightly closed with a massive rubber plug. If you use it carefully, it is unlikely to begin to leak over time.

The set of connectors is the same as in the JBL Charge 2 - 3.5 mm TRS output, micro-USB for charging the speaker, USB port (5 V, 2 A) for charging other devices. Note that JBL does not skimp on the output amperes in the Charge speakers, which is good news

Passive radiators are placed in the recesses at the ends, as before. As far as we were able to see, they cannot let water through.

To complete the picture, let's look at the column below. The base has a small area and a relief texture. Considering the solid weight of the speaker, there is no need to worry about stability.

In addition to the charge indicator, Charge 3 lights up the power button: blue when paired via Bluetooth and just white when turned on. The JBL Connect button next to it also lights up white when the mode is running.

The design of the JBL Charge 3 is truly a success. A beautiful symmetrical body, an interesting textile covering and the absence of dubious design solutions such as touch buttons. It's no surprise that some other JBL speakers are very similar to this one. The manufacturer will have to try very hard to do something even more interesting in the next generations of portable speakers.

Measurements

We carried out frequency response measurements speaker system on the axis of the main speakers.

Almost along its entire length, the graph maintains an acceptable deviation, without extensive dips and peaks. The declared frequency range surprisingly clearly coincides with the lower limit - 65 Hz. But on the opposite side, the level goes beyond -6 dB much earlier than the declared 20 kHz.

Now, using the method described in the JBL Charge 2 review, let’s estimate the sound pressure.

Acoustic systemMaximum sound pressure, dBA
JBL Charge 387,0
Microlab D2169,7/74,0
Microlab D22 (speakers up/microphone)70,9/76,3
Creative Sound Blaster Roar 2 (horizontal (with Roar) / vertical (with Roar))78,4 (80,0) / 84,2 (85,9)
Microlab T584,4
Fugoo Tough (normal/loud mode)75,7 / 78,9
Bliss Sound BTA-871,3
Microlab MD11264,9
JBL Charge 281,2
Creative Sound Blaster Roar (Roar mode off/on)79,1 / 80,4

The move to 10-watt speakers did not leave our measurement microphone indifferent. The numbers show that even the Sound Blaster Roar 2 with boost mode is no match for the competition. The lag, however, is quite insignificant.

Sound

Since JBL Charge 2, the sound has become more balanced. This is noticeable if you pay attention to the place of vocals in the compositions: with many other speakers it dominates, while with the JBL Charge 3 it sounds in harmony with the rest of the ensemble. The accents of the drums, the attack of the strings, and the ringing of cowbells are in place. The openness of sound characteristic of the series has not gone away - there is no need to cheat with the installation, the main speakers look straight ahead.

We had the opportunity to reproduce different connection schemes with the JBL Charge 3. First, we connected the speaker via a cable to the output of the E-MU 0404 USB audio card, which played FLAC songs from the computer. Then we connected the speaker via Bluetooth to Huawei Nova Plus and transmitted the same tracks from the Deezer streaming service to the speaker in so-called “high” quality, the characteristics of which are not specified.

Based on the results of the comparison, the conclusion is this: you shouldn’t dismiss portable audio systems that “only play home videos from VKontakte.” With different connections, the sound differed radically. With a Bluetooth connection, the touches of instruments and dynamics almost disappeared, and vocal parts began to confidently drown out the rest of the “mess.” With a better quality tract things were much better. If JBL Charge 3 form factor systems fit perfectly into cramped concrete boxes, then why not try using them in stationary scenarios? Perhaps this will be enough for you, and you can use the saved space to greater advantage.

JBL Charge 3 features JBL Connect mode, which allows you to synchronize multiple JBL speakers. Everything works the same way as we described in the JBL Pulse 2 review - through the JBL Connect application. In addition, JBL Charge 3 can work as wireless headset, and there is nothing unusual in the implementation of this mode.

Autonomous operation

As usual, we measured time battery life when connected via Bluetooth. 40 minutes before the scheduled time, JBL Charge 3 turned off. Apparently, in an attempt to conserve the remaining charge. But the disco must go on, and we squeezed some more time out of the speaker.

Acoustic systemApproximate volumeBattery lifeCharging time using standard means
JBL Charge 3average13 h 50 min3 hours 30 minutes
JBL Charge 2averagearound 6 p.m.about 2 hours
Microlab D2150% 15 h 30 min4 hours 50 minutes
Microlab D2250% 7 hours 10 minutes4 hours
Creative Sound Blaster Roar 280% 5 hours 40 minutesabout 2.5 hours
Creative Sound Blaster Roaraverage7 hours 40 minutesabout 2 hours 20 minutes
Microlab T5average5 hours 30 minutes6-8 hours
Pioneer FreeMe XW-LF1averageabout 12 hours 20 minutesjust over 2 hours
Denon Envayaaverageabout 10 o'clock2 hours 30 minutes
Luxa2 GroovyWaverageabout 12 hours 20 minutesjust over 2 hours

Compared to the second version, battery life has decreased and charging time has increased. It’s nice that the device does not interrupt the music with low battery messages, but only flashes a red charge indicator.

conclusions

JBL continues to confidently lead the Charge series towards excellence. It is commendable that sound quality and design remain a priority. A striking distinctive feature of Charge 3 is its high level of protection against moisture. The sum of all the benefits adds up to a versatile portable device: ready for adventures on the beach in the summer, and ready for parties in large living rooms in the winter.

At the time of writing, JBL Charge 3 costs 2-3 thousand more than JBL Charge 2+. The extra cost here will be completely justified: the Charge 3 looks better in everything except battery life.

Bigger, louder, more powerful than the previous model, and most importantly - protected from moisture. The new JBL Charge 3 speaker excites the minds of lovers of portable acoustics and for good reason - it offers much more features without increasing the price tag.

Appearance

The outlines of the new JBL Charge 3 column remain the same, although it has become more “complete”. “Charge 3” is larger than the previous one, covered with protective fabric, which allows you to use the speaker in the rain or near water. Another function of this coating is that it does not slip in your hands, even if the speaker has just been taken out of the water. At the back there is a large “Charge” inscription on a flap that hides the USB, micro-USB and AUX ports. On the top panel there are six tactile control buttons (not touch). There is a convenient stand at the bottom, although the Charge can be placed on the end, but then the sound of one of the bass radiators will be muffled.

JBL Charge 3 is available in five bright colors - from standard black and gray to an unusual and delicate sea green.

One of the control buttons is responsible for the JBL Connect function and allows you to create a wireless chain with other supporting speakers, resulting in wireless stereo sound - a novelty in the world of portable acoustics, which is offered today only by Harman.

In addition to creating a stereo chain, the user can connect up to three sources via Bluetooth - it does not matter whether it is a smartphone or a laptop - and switch music from them in turn. Convenient, because at the party everyone wants to play their own track.

As for the dimensions, the enlarged Charge 3 has become even more comfortable to fit in the hand, still easily fits into a backpack or bag, it can be mounted on a bicycle frame and taken with you to the sports field. Of course, the weight has also increased - the new speaker weighs 800 grams versus 600 grams for the second model.

Battery and water protection

The instructions for the JBL Charge 3 indicate that it has an IPX7 protection protocol: “Temporary immersion in water will not have any harmful effects on the device under standard conditions of pressure and duration of immersion.” More specifically, the column can be immersed in water no more than 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. Accordingly, rain or splashes will not have any effect on the performance of the JBL Charge 3. The only thing you need to remember is to close the rear plug tightly and do not put the column on charge immediately after taking it out of the water.

Speaking of charging, the new speaker is equipped with a 6000 mAh battery, which promises up to 20 hours of playback time at medium volume. A discharged battery is fully charged in 3.5 hours via USB from a computer and in 2.5 hours from the original power supply.

External battery

What makes JBL Charge 3 especially convenient is that it acts as a charger for devices via USB. “Device” refers to both phones, players, tablets, and so on. It is incredibly convenient and functional, especially in modern life.

Built-in speakerphone

Another feature of the new speaker is VoiceLogic technology, which Harman introduced a couple of years ago. It reduces echo and increases the signal-to-noise ratio, creating a complete feeling of a private conversation on the phone. The interlocutor's voice sounds loud, clear and even somewhat melodic.

Thanks to the built-in speakerphone, you can calmly go about your business by placing the speaker nearby - work, write, listen to music and, of course, answer calls if necessary.

Sound

JBL Charge 3 has two 50 mm speakers and two passive radiators that extend to the ends of the speaker. The power has increased to 20 W - this means that even for such a medium-sized speaker, the volume reserve is more than enough! Sound is transmitted via Bluetooth 4.1 protocol. “Charge” plays easily, powerfully, with deep bass and pleasant balance.

Conclusion

Almost a day in music playback mode, the ability to charge your devices, wireless stereo connection with other speakers, the ability to connect up to three devices to play music in turn, and water protection. All these advantages are priced at 10,990 rubles and placed in a stylish, pleasant case. With JBL Charge 3, it's easy to feel connected to the latest technological breakthroughs. And although the essence of the speaker comes down to listening to music, Charge still gives something more - a feeling of freedom and taste of life.

And, despite the fact that summer has reached the home stretch, splash protection makes it possible to enjoy using the JBL Charge 3 throughout the fall, even rainy and squally.
