This work tells the story of the merchant Afanasy Nikitin, who leaves his homeland - Ryazan and moves to the lands of Shirvan. On the road, Nikitin begins to work on his notes about sailing across three seas. The first sea is Derbent, the second is Indian and the third is Black.

Afanasy continues on his way. He lives for a short time in various cities, after which he goes beyond the Indian Sea. There he is engaged in trade and almost loses the stallion he brought. Treasurer Muhamed stands up for him, and the Muslims return the stallion. Nikitin considers what happened to be a miracle.

The traveler describes the life and customs of people living in India. He is especially interested in the issue of religion. Afanasy Nikitin laments the fact that he has already lost his way with the church calendar. By the stars he determines the onset of Easter. Then he returns to his homeland.

And the sovereign sits on a golden stretcher, and above him is a silk canopy with a golden top. And they carry him on 4 horses in golden harnesses. Yes, there are a great many people around him, and in front of him there are singers and many dancers. And all with drawn swords and sabers, with shields, with spears and with bows, straight and large; and the horses are all in armor, and they have sideks on them. Others go all naked, only with a cloth on their backs, shame covered.

The moon in Bidar is full for 3 days. There are no sweet vegetables in Bidar. There is no intense heat in Hindustan; intense heat in Hormuz, and in Bahrain, where pearls are born, and in Jiddo, and in Baku, and in Egypt, and in Arabstan, and in Lara. And from Aberkukh he went to Yazd, 9 days, and was in Yazd 8 days. And from Yazd he went to Ispagan, 5 days, and was in Ispagan for 6 days. And from Ispagan he went to Kashan, and was in Kashan for 5 days. And from Kashan he went to Kum, and from Kuma he went to Sava. And from Sava he went to Sultaniya. And from Sultaniya he went to Tabriz. And from Tabriz he went to the horde to Hasan-bek, he stayed in the horde for 10 days, since there was no way anywhere. And Hasan Bek sent his army of 40 thousand against the Turkish [Sultan], and they took Sivas; and they took Tokat and set it on fire, they took Amasia and plundered many villages there. And they went to fight against Karaman. And I went from the horde to Arzinjan, and from Arzinjan I went to Trebizond.
