Installing and removing programs on Windows Mobile- a fairly simple operation, but sometimes people who have not previously used communicators with this operating system have difficulties installing new and removing unnecessary software.
In this article (with pictures!) we will look at the process of installing and uninstalling programs on a device with Windows Mobile 6.0. The computer operating system is Windows XP.

Before installing the program, you need to download it. We go to Trashbox and download the application that interests us, for example.

Downloaded. Program and game files for Windows Mobile must have the extension .cab
If the file extension is zip, rar or 7z, you should first unpack the archive; it should contain a cab file. Some programs do not need to be installed; they already have an extension .exe

Now you need to go into your phone. We will use the standard method - through Windows Explorer. It assumes that ActiveSync is already installed. Open "My Computer" and find "Mobile Device"

In fact, now the file can be dropped anywhere on the device. If you have a memory card, then you should see the “Storage Card” folder. I usually copy programs there. After copying, turn off your phone and find your file in Explorer.

Click on it and the installation will start. In most cases, a message like this will pop up. Ignore it and click Yes.

Next, the installer will ask where the program should be installed, also showing the free space.

If everything is fine, the installation will be successful, you will only need to confirm completion.

The program will now be available in the list of programs (Start - Programs)

Windows Mobile Device Center is a built-in system manager for managing mobile devices connected to a computer. The program works flawlessly on devices with Windows Mobile 2003 (or newer) installed. The main purpose of the application is to create an active connection between the PC and connected external devices: phones, tablets, smartphones. Using Device Center, the user can synchronize data between specified devices, as well as manage audio and video files. Such application features will be useful primarily for business people who value their time. Without any additional effort or exhaustive search for compatible drivers, they can quickly sync important information: Emails, contacts and calendar appointments, as well as work documents.

In order to fully use all the capabilities of the program, you should go through several setup steps step by step. The Windows operating system still remains the main one for work, unlike the entertainment mobile Android and iOS. However, there are applications for all three platforms, such as LastPass, Slack or Evernote.

Windows 10 has a wide range of productivity applications with unique functionality.

Drawboard PDF, Office Lens, Office Mobile, and OneNote work well with styluses, keyboards, and mice. You can unlock some of them using the camera and Windows Hello, and you can also search for content using Microsoft's personal assistant Cortana.

Prices for apps that run on Windows 10 vary. Many of them have a free trial period, others are completely free. Microsoft apps require an Office 365 subscription to do more than just edit files created on other devices. The program is already installed on computers. You can open it and create an endless number of digital notes. Input using a stylus, mouse and keyboard is supported. Notes will remain on the screen until you remove them; it is convenient to use them if you have more than one monitor. Cortana, a virtual assistant, can create links and reminders based on what's written in your sticky notes.

If you need to write down great ideas that come to mind, there is this board. Microsoft offers a digital canvas where you can write and draw images and share changes with other users in real time. There are digital tools, such as a ruler and compass, that can make creating designs easier.

The new operating system could easily be called Windows Mobile 5.0 Second Edition, since there are not many innovations in it, there is no such global restructuring of the system as in Windows Mobile 5.0. We will see a significant update only in the next version. It is codenamed Windows Mobile Photon, which will appear in two years at best. With the release of new versions in the Microsoft family of products, including MS Windows Vista, MS Office 2007, MS Exchange 2007, the software giant could not help but release an updated version of Windows Mobile. Many innovations in Windows Mobile 6.0 are aimed at supporting the functions of MS Exchange 2007. As before, the division into WM for Pocket PC and WM for Smartphone will remain; this division will disappear only in WM Photon. Today we are talking about the version for Pocket PC.

As we have already found out, the project name of the new version of Windows Mobile is Crossbow. Let's remember together what project names previous versions of mobile Windows had, as well as the announcement dates.

If earlier it was quite simple to understand the ownership of an OS based on its name, now you need to remember the designations, the words themselves Professional, Standard And Classic they can only indirectly say about the purpose of this version of the system.

As one developer friend said in a private conversation, Crossbow (translated as crossbow) is a weapon aimed at competitors. Let's see what innovations Microsoft is going to kill its competitors with, let's designate them. Let's look at why certain functions appeared and the prerequisites for their occurrence. Numerous innovations in Outlook Mobile are associated with the need for integration with the new version of MS Exchange. New appearance and soundtrack - the result of the imminent appearance of Windows Vista on the shelves. Integration with Windows Live and the new Live Messenger Mobile app are also predictable steps. Built-in VoIP support is a response to the actions of competitors whose products already have such built-in support, a response to the current realities of the market in which VoIP support is in demand. Integration Smart functions Dial 2.0 in Pocket PC is another significant step towards the inevitable merger of the two branches of Windows Mobile. Naturally, WM Crossbow incorporates all the changes from the AKU updates for Windows Mobile 5.0.

The requirements for system resources have not changed - this is 32 MB Flash ROM, the volume random access memory– 32 MB. The most typical volume for devices will remain 64 MB ROM and 64 MB RAM, while the ROM volume can reach several gigabytes depending on the model. The operating system has old requirements for processor performance, that is, it will work acceptably at a frequency of 200 MHz. According to the first impressions of working with the system, productivity has increased by eye, everything loads and works faster. This is noted by almost everyone who got acquainted with the system interface. The process of optimizing system speed began in AKU 3.0, where the system boot time after a soft reboot was reduced.

The optional system is based on the old Windows Compact Edition (WinCE) kernel, version five, while the sixth version has already been announced. The difference between the fifth version of the kernel and the previous one is the appearance of support for Direct3D Mobile (initially optimized for Wireless MMX, a technology supported Intel processors XScale of the latest generation), Windows Error Reporting, the ability to work as a USB drive without drivers (not all Windows Mobile end devices implement this feature by manufacturers), improved support for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and many other changes. Thanks to the relatively old kernel and minimal changes to the interface, there are no problems with compatibility with existing programs. We have tested many programs, they work exactly the same as with Windows Mobile 5.0, there are no problems with incompatibility.

General changes

When starting for the first time, the device asks you to set a password for the device (simple four-digit or strong, you can additionally enter a hint for the code). After which you are prompted to immediately set up your mail, the mail setup assistant comes into action (we saw this function for the first time in WM 5.0 AKU 3.0). It is very convenient for an inexperienced user that all important settings, including security (which many people forget about) and mail, can be set right away.

Absolutely all system sounds and built-in ringtones have been rewritten from scratch, there are practically no old ones left (there is no such familiar melody as Old Phone, which many set as a ringtone).

The interface as a whole has undergone cosmetic changes, application icons have been replaced, they have become pseudo-three-dimensional. All these changes cannot be called serious; they do not in any way affect the ergonomics of the device. A slight update, new touches in the perception of appearance, nothing more.

The cross in the upper right corner, as before, only minimizes the running program, but does not close it. The ideology of the operating system assumes that the OS itself decides which programs the user needs at the moment, and which can be closed as unnecessary (the Smart Minimizing concept). You can force the cross to close the program by installing an additional utility. The start screen looks the same and has exactly the same features as before.

At the top left is the “Start” button, to the right, in the top strip of indicators, everything is unchanged - connection indicator (GPRS, Wi-Fi, Active Sync), cellular network signal indicator, volume, time.

Management, information input

One of the key innovations in WM 5.0 is improved control using hardware keys. This is the appearance of soft keys, significantly improved support for the hardware QWERTY keyboard, the main thing is that many actions could be performed with one hand, without taking out the pen. At the time of its appearance, the implementation of one-handed control in Pocket PC left much to be desired; there were many places in the system where it was impossible to do without using a touch screen. We see a gradual improvement in control in the AKU updates, however, we will not get ideal control with one hand even in Windows Mobile 6, sometimes the stylus is irreplaceable.

There are several ways to enter information into the device. You can enter text from a hardware QWERTY keyboard (if present), or you can connect an external keyboard. All new devices support the Bluetooth HID profile, so there will be no problems connecting a Bluetooth keyboard.

In WM 6 Professional, support for combinations of hardware keys (shortcuts) of the QWERTY keyboard and numeric keypad has been improved; they are now similar to the desktop version of MS Outlook. For example, while in the message viewing mode, holding down the “2” or “R” key will answer the letter, “4” or “F” will forward the message, “7” or “D” will mark the message for download. There are many more minor changes to working with the keyboard and navigation using hardware keys, but I don’t want to dwell on them separately. It is obvious that the company is already preparing the basis for the transition to a single platform, where all actions can be carried out as in WM for Smartphone, that is, only with hardware keys.

The predictive input mechanism (CompIME) has been slightly improved. After the first letter entered, the system offers four options (WM 5.0 offers one word by default) of a word to choose from, using the built-in dictionary and previously entered words, that is, the system learns as you enter information. Another innovation is that you can clear the database of words that the system remembered after you, that is, return to the untrained version.

In addition to the hardware keyboard, a virtual one can be used - you press symbols with a stylus on the touch screen. It has not changed compared to WM 5.0. As an alternative to the built-in keyboard, you can use, for example, Resco Keyboard Pro (input in many languages is supported, including Russian).

Block Recognizer– character-by-character character recognition system, characters are entered one by one, with one stroke. To some extent, this is an analogue of Graffiti in Palm OS, everything is the same as in the previous version of Windows Mobile.

Letter Recognizer– input is character-by-character, but the manner of writing letters is closer to natural writing. Each character can be entered with one or several strokes.

Transcriber– unlike previous input methods, it allows you to write words at once anywhere on the screen, not necessarily in capital letters, you can write them together. Transcriber is not always included in the standard package. The downside of this input is that it supports a limited number of languages; for most countries, Transcriber support is useless.

This way everything is supported existing methods entering information.

Phone/Telephone

The telephone part has undergone very serious changes. The main innovation is built-in support for VoIP (standard SIP protocol). It's not surprising that Microsoft has implemented native client support, since this feature has been present in Nokia Eseries devices for a long time. Internet telephony support is in demand in the market.

The second significant innovation is that the Smart Dial 2.0 function is used to quickly search through contacts; when typing from a hardware or virtual keyboard, a search is launched through contacts and call logs. Finally, this function is implemented in Windows Mobile for Pocket PC, because before that it was present only in Windows Mobile for Smartphone. When dialing a number, the virtual keyboard can be removed, which is convenient for devices like Asus P525, GIGABYTE g-Smart i120.

Speed Dial. Quick call to a subscriber, you need to create the list yourself. When you hold down the virtual key for a few seconds, one of nine numbers is dialed.

Call History. The main complaint about the call list was that the entries are not grouped by subscriber. That is, if you tried to call a certain number 20 times, this will create 20 entries in the list, which is not very convenient to navigate later. Unfortunately, nothing has changed in Windows Mobile 6.0, but this is not a very serious minus - the call list is already as functional as possible. The number of entries is unlimited, call history can be exported to desktop MS Outlook.

In the settings of the telephone part, we only note that you can set files with the extension wav, wma, mid, mp3 as a ringtone. The following ringing options are available: just ring, increasing ring, one-time ring, just vibration, vibration and ring, vibration then ring. As an alternative for managing personal ringtones and photo contacts, we can recommend the above-mentioned Photo Contacts Pro program.

Outlook Mobile

One of the main tasks of pocket computers is organizing contacts, work schedules, to-do lists, and notes. You can add email to this. Naturally, all this should be synchronized without problems. All this is included in the Outlook Mobile package. Almost all changes in Outlook Mobile are aimed at integration with MS Exchange 12 and support for new functions in it.

Contacts. Contact capabilities are at the level of a desktop analog. In WM 6.0, the number of fields when entering contacts remains unchanged. In addition to a photo, you can assign a ringtone to an individual contact. There are 37 fields available to fill in (additional fields - IM, Company Tel, IM2, IM3, Manager, Govt. ID, Account, Customer ID), text note (text only, you can no longer draw by hand in it or save a voice note). You cannot change the name of the fields, just like in the desktop version. It’s hard to call this a disadvantage - 37 fields are more than enough, and if something doesn’t fit, you can write it down in a text note. There are fields for two home and two work numbers, but only one mobile number, the name and number of fields cannot be changed, as in the desktop version. You cannot assign a melody to a group; this will have to be done using a third-party program, for example, Photo Contacts Pro. You can search the Company Directory if a work contact is not saved in the device's address book. There are no problems when synchronizing with a PC, including with the Russian language.

New in Windows Mobile 6 contacts - you can change a contact from the contact list; previously you had to enter the contact, and then the “change” item became available. Fields in contacts and menu items have been reshuffled and arranged more logically. You can call it a cosmetic change; the average user will not notice it. When viewing a contact, in addition to other information, the time of the last conversation with him is displayed, and you can display the call log for this contact.

Calendar. Using this application, you can plan your time - keep a schedule of current affairs, meetings, and other events. There are four viewing modes available - day, week, month, year. Synchronization with desktop computer and server does not cause any problems. As before, in terms of functions it does not reach the analogue in desktop MS Outlook; the mobile version is greatly simplified.

There are several innovations. In viewing mode "Day" a horizontal bar has been added, which shows occupancy during the day, and clearly shows the distribution of events during the day (see illustration). If you have been assigned a meeting (Meeting Request), then you can accept this meeting by mail.

You can also reply while viewing a meeting in your calendar to the meeting organizer, to all participants (to communicate some important information, for example, that you are late for a meeting), to invite a new participant. In fact, you can work with scheduling appointments in WM 6 as flexibly as with desktop MS Outlook (of course, if your company has MS Exchange 2007). You can also edit a message directly from your mobile device, automatically reply when out of office (OOF, Out of Office). These features were not present in Windows Mobile 5.0.

Tasks. This program is used to schedule tasks. It is as simple as possible, greatly reduced in comparison with its PC counterpart. You can only set deadlines, priority, task completion indicator, set a reminder and define a category. For example, you cannot set the percentage of task completion. Synchronization occurs without any complaints. There are no changes compared to the previous version.

Notes. In this program you can take notes by hand, use a voice recorder or a virtual keyboard. Handwritten text can be recognized (Latin characters only). Notes also sync with the desktop version of MS Outlook. Notes can be taken during a call, then they are attached to the corresponding call in the call log.

Messaging. The built-in email client has always been not the best strong point Windows Mobile, but that seems to be changing. The first significant step in this direction was made in Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 2.0 with the advent of Microsoft Direct Push support. The most significant change in Windows Mobile 6.0 is support for HTML in emails (previously only text). This is where the innovations are just beginning.

Filter messages using Smart Filter. From the message list view screen, you can search through messages, similar to searching the Smart Dial when searching for a contact. As soon as you start typing text from the keyboard, the selection of letters in which the entered text is present will immediately begin (search by name, e-mail address, subject of the letter and message body, if it is SMS). An extremely convenient and useful feature if you have a lot of messages stored on your device and need to quickly find what you are looking for.

The mail setup assistant appeared in the WM 5.0 AKU 3.0 update. The manufacturer can configure the settings of popular email services (gmail.com, rambler.ru, and so on), the user will only have to select an email service, enter a login and password for configuration. MS Exchange settings are accessible from Outlook Mobile, there is no need to run Active Sync.

Search messages on the server (requires MS Exchange 2007). The user can, without downloading all messages, search directly on the server. Search results are downloaded to the device and stored in a special folder (to save traffic, only a minimum of information about each letter is downloaded on the first request).

Fitch Mail (requires MS Exchange 2007). Fitch Mail allows you to selectively download each message. The user has the right to choose what and how to download - a letter in text format or in HTML format, download all attached files or only part of them. Moreover, if the message size is, for example, 15 KB, and 10 KB have already been downloaded, then upon additional loading only 5 KB more will be downloaded, and not the entire 15 KB. Thus, Fitch Mail reduces the amount of traffic consumed by mail and increases the speed of working with it.

Flags in messages (requires MS Exchange 2007). Each message can be marked with a flag, as it has long been possible to do in the desktop version of MS Outlook 2003. The user can add reminders to letters, mark letters, for example, as important, which should be answered first. A separate folder contains tagged letters.

Access to SharePoint file storage (requires MS Exchange 2007), for example, when you receive a letter with a link to a document located on a SharePoint server. In this case, such a document is seen by the user as a regular attachment.

It is now possible to receive and create IRM (Information Rights Management) protected messages, in which, for example, forwarding is prohibited (Do Not Forward). Among competing platforms, this function is not implemented anywhere else.

And the last thing we can note here is that it becomes possible to select a folder for mail synchronization; previously only the main folder was synchronized (MS Exchange 2007 is required).

After the advent of Direct Push technology, HTML support, and the addition of the Smart Filter function, the need for an alternative email client becomes less obvious. As an alternative, we can recommend Flex Mail 2007; it is rightfully one of the best email clients for Pocket PC.

Text messages are in the same program. Everything is standard here. In the settings, you can set the default delivery notification request.

From worthy alternatives Outlook Mobile (contacts, calendar, tasks, notes, but not mail) we can name the most famous and functional packages - Pocket Informant and Agenda Fusion.

Office Mobile

Alas, there are no noticeable changes in the office suite; apparently, Microsoft's passion has faded after a major improvement in the mobile office suite in Windows Mobile 5.0. The only noticeable change is that when opening large files, a slider appears at the bottom of the screen, which shows how much has already been downloaded and how much is left.

Excel Mobile. The mobile spreadsheet processor has not changed compared to the previous version. It allows you to create, view and edit regular MS Office documents. When editing, most of the elements of the original file are preserved. Zoom, full screen display, entering formulas, formatting cells are available. If desired, you can build graphs.

Word Mobile. The built-in text editor has not changed. The possibilities for creating documents are similar to its predecessor, this is simple formatting of text, paragraphs, lists, you cannot insert a table or picture, not to mention more complex design.

PowerPoint Mobile. A relatively new program that appeared as part of the Windows Mobile 5.0 package. It is intended only for viewing presentations; they cannot be edited. It works almost flawlessly, displaying pictures and basic graphics. Large files download quite quickly.

Calculator. Everything is standard, without innovations or changes. An ordinary calculator, nothing more.

Internet

Internet Explorer. At first glance, there are no changes. The page processing engine has not changed. Major changes (full screen mode, the ability to save pictures, one-column mode without horizontal scrolling) were made in Windows Mobile 5.0. One of the main drawbacks has not yet been eliminated - the inability to open several windows at the same time. Alternatives include the MultiIE program, which can be used to open multiple windows. More precisely, it is an add-on over the built-in Internet Explorer, expanding its capabilities.

Multimedia

Windows Media version 10.3. This player has remained virtually unchanged since Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Its main purpose is to serve as an addition to the desktop version of WM10 and the just released WM11, to synchronize with it via ActiveSync. Play music and videos. You can simply copy the files to the memory card, the player itself will find the songs and sort them in the library. The user himself can assign a rating to compositions on a five-point scale (the rating is displayed in the form of stars - from one to five). A logical step on Microsoft's part in the near future will be the release of the 11th version of Windows Media for Windows Mobile, which will add support for UPnP and the ability to purchase music directly to the device.

Disadvantages - lack of equalizer settings, inability to assign actions to buttons in standby mode (in previous versions this was possible). To play video, we recommend using the Core Player program (formerly TCPMP), it has no equal among its competitors. And for listening to music, the functional player Pocket Player is best suited. To be fair, we note that the capabilities provided by the built-in player will be quite enough for a not very demanding user.

Pictures &Videos. A simple program for viewing photos and videos captured by a built-in or external digital camera. There are a huge number of alternative photo viewers on the market that are superior to this built-in utility. Although, if there are no special requirements for the viewer, then it will do.

File Explorer/Explorer. A simple file browser. Easy to manage, designed to perform only the most basic operations with files. There are no innovations in it. One of the most functional alternatives is the file browser RESCO File Explorer, the capabilities of which are disproportionately higher.

Windows Live

Under the influence of the rapid development of Google services, Microsoft is changing its global strategy, paying close attention to online services. The core of the online strategy is the site live.com, which is gradually acquiring various new services with the Live prefix (Live Mail, Live OneCare, and so on). You can view and respond to Live Mail emails from your shared mailbox; there are no changes compared to the regular interface. In the settings, you can set the instant receipt of letters when they arrive on the server, but in reality, only downloading letters manually works so far. Additional functions include synchronizing contacts with the Live Mail server and storing them on the server. Unfortunately, the picture attached to the contact card is not synchronized. It would be logical if in the future it becomes possible to synchronize the calendar.

Finally, we move on to look at Live Messenger Mobile, which replaces Pocket MSN. This messenger has many more features than its predecessor. In it you can exchange files, voice notes (something similar to an Internet walkie-talkie, works great via GPRS), set a picture for your user, and see images of other users.

Marketplace. This development is a shell for building an electronic software catalog store. With it you can download, install and purchase additional software. In this case, the manufacturer selects a partner who will support the Marketplace. The Marketplace shell only defines a common interface, an API for a third-party developer. You can also download updates and additional modules for installed programs using the Marketplace.

Encryption/encryption. After the release of MSFP (Messaging and Security Feature Pack) for Windows Mobile 5.0, Microsoft was bombarded with accusations from corporate users and security experts regarding the level of security in Windows Mobile 5.0. Without installing additional software, the memory card was unprotected from hackers. Having obtained the device, the attacker could remove the card from the locked communicator and read it on any other device, taking possession of the necessary data. In Windows Mobile 5.0, a memory card encryption function appears, now it can only be read on one specific device or via ActiveSync.

WindowsUpdate. Similar to the desktop version, Windows Update performs system update functions. You can choose either automatic update or manual update. There are no updates to the site yet, so it's impossible to say how this feature works yet. Windows 10 Mobile is a version of the Windows 10 OS for mobile devices with a screen diagonal of up to nine inches.
