Company Sony Ericsson hastily turned the S600 into the second Walkman series phone and gave it the W550 index. The differences between the devices are minimal and are expressed in the amount of built-in memory that has increased to 256 MB and a pre-installed orange panel (the second one in the set is a calmer color). All other characteristics, as they say, are repeated one after another, even the code name for both models is the same, because inside they are identical. The reason for such a sharp change in course and renaming of the existing model is extremely simple - the need to promote the Walkman series (more details).

As a result, users get a more interesting product for almost the same money: the presence of 256 MB of memory allows you to use the device as an MP3 player (2-3 hours of music can fit in this amount of memory). good quality). The player itself has been redesigned and resembles that of the Sony Ericsson W800, at least externally (there are no differences from the K750 internally or in terms of functions).

It is worth saying that the kit includes normal detachable headphones; you can connect your “ears” to the standard connector on them. But the quality of the droplets is quite decent; they provide good sound.

It is worth noting that the package includes the Disc2Phone program, which allows you to convert music discs into MP3 files and transfer them to your phone. However, the program works great with the K750 and is freely available on the Sony Ericsson website, so we can’t talk about any special bonus here.

The model will go on sale in October and its cost will be about 350-370 dollars. The manufacturer emphasizes that the cost will be maintained at the level of the K750, although it will exceed it at the first moment. I, in general, am a young man, and I remember with trepidation those not-so-distant times when cell phone manufacturers knew how to surprise and amaze consumers by releasing something onto the market that, much time later (and some immediately) received the title “legend.” ". At that time, companies were not chasing gigabytes and megahertz, but the products of their creativity remained objects of desire for many of us for a long time after their release.

A characteristic difference between the W550 and / is that the latter can take photographs while closed. The Walkman must be opened - this is logical, since the shutter button is still right in the middle, and you can zoom the image with your left hand, but even when closed, the convenience of working with the camera does not suffer at all, so why open the phone? Both cameras have 1.3 megapixels, I haven’t had a chance to compare photos, so I won’t say who won who. Let me just say that the camera of this phone got my wife hooked on photography; it took countless shots. Moreover, the flash on the W550 works as a flashlight, which can be turned on, turned on for a minute, or sent an SOS light signal in Morse code. The flashlight is bright, all sorts of budget Nokias with poor LEDs are out of the question - checked. The only thing that has not been tested is how actively the battery drains when it is used unrestrictedly.

The antenna, designed like in earlier models, for example, Z200 and J230, deserves attention. Here, both in the closed and in the open state, touching it is excluded, which reduces the radiation power and saves battery charge. And sometimes you see people on the street talking with their mobile phones in their arms, clearly not experienced in the intricacies of how a cell phone works. With the W550, this number will not work - the antenna most often ends up outside the coverage area of ​​the hand, which is a plus for the developers.

The main drawback of all Sony Ericssons is the screen that does not go off during a call. I don’t understand for what purpose this was done, maybe to spy on the conversation time? However, the battery drains great. By the way, the call time counter cannot be turned off, as well as the call summary - I consider this an advantage.

The W550 has stereo speakers, and they are located in an unusual way - on the back and sides, the sound volume is amazing, which is what all Walkmans are famous for. There is also a whole set of communications - infraport, Bluetooth, SMS, MMS. It is more convenient to work with messages, since all the symbols are displayed, assigned to a specific button, and the current position while typing - this feature has not changed since Ericsson. Messages are easy to delete, their contents are displayed in the list, and when sent, the last recipients are displayed... It's a pity, you can't just exit the editor - the message is saved in. “Drafts”, and if you press “C”, the text will not be quickly deleted - another inconvenience from Sony Ericsson.

There are two more so-called game buttons in the model, similar to those in the Motorola A920 / A925 and the like. Unlike Motorola, they are used exclusively in games, as you might guess from the name, and do not carry any load outside the gaming space. By the way, about games - the navigation key in the model is eight-position + central press, although there are only five spots on the board, from which we can conclude that the phone can move the cursor diagonally, responding to the simultaneous pressing of two directions of the navigation key. This convenience makes the game easier, and my wife also appreciated it, killing a lot of time with Wormix.

Among the design features, I would like to note that when opened, the phone is slightly bent and seems to follow the curve of the face, like Nokia / and indeed all rotators. This mechanism is also implemented in the kick-slider form factor, when when the slider phone is opened, the upper part seems to tilt forward, imitating a clamshell. However, the prevalence of this subtype of sliders is apparently even less than that of rotators, and therefore it is good that the latter have such a feature. Among the famous kick sliders, we can recall the Z-series from the same Motorola - as rare now as any rotator.

When it comes to surfing the Internet, the W550 has proven itself to be the best, as evidenced by the thousands of hours my wife spent on a dating site, constantly updating the current page. And nothing slowed me down!

As a player, the phone is also excellent - not least thanks to the standard included headphones. No matter how much I searched later, I could not find normal ones comparable to them in quality. Nowadays you can only find disposable consumer goods. With the thinnest wires that break from any unsuccessful bending. I wouldn’t list the FastPort connector as an advantage - it often oxidizes, which is why it’s been replaced a bunch of times, and besides, any accessory takes up its entirety. What if you need to talk through headphones or listen to music while charging your phone? A Bluetooth headset is a possible solution, but not everyone has one, and the model does not support A2DP technology. Well, at least it can charge via USB...

When folded, the phone is quite thick, I would say thicker than any rotator, but due to its small height and width it looks and feels quite monoblock. You can’t stuff it into the back pocket of your jeans (and don’t!), but it will fit anywhere without any problems. And the appearance of the device is serious - for some reason my wife’s sister called it a “rocket”. Maybe it’s true, it has a cosmic appearance, there’s something stuck everywhere on the body, all sorts of sliders, buttons, speakers, windows, cameras, flashes, antennas, mirrors - it’s like an interplanetary station for you.

The current fate of the Sony Ericsson W550 is unenviable - it is waiting for the next repair, of which it has gone through a great many, without a front panel, without a cover, with a white screen - in a word, the use of its wife's brother has taken its toll. For some reason, nothing happened to her, but while my brother was using it, he couldn’t bear it... Finally, my brother gave it to me, saying that it was only in a gold frame - so much money was spent on repairs. I didn’t say that you need to be able to use things, because you really need to be able and want to. Now I just hope that it will finally find peace on one of the shelves of my cell phone collection. In a new building and fully working. I have already looked at the case, all that remains is to take it down for service. I have no doubt that the great work of the Sony Ericsson alliance will work again, as it has happened more than once. He has had his share of many incidents, and it’s time to retire. And finally, I will rate it 7 points. For nothing. Just. Because he was so unique, not like anyone else.
