Operating system and shell

01.10.2021 General

The hero of today's review HTC Desire 601 is a smartphone with a 4.5-inch display with a resolution of 960x540 pixels, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and 1 GB of RAM. Desire 601 inherited stereo speakers and some similarity in body design from the One family models.

Design and ergonomics

Thanks to the stereo speaker grids, the location of the light and proximity sensors, and the presence of only two hardware touch keys, the design notes of the One family are easily recognizable. Desire 601 also inherited the location of the power key; as in the One models, it is located on the top. On the right, under the top speaker grille, there is a barely noticeable LED indicator. Although the smartphone is not large, only 134x66.7x9.88 mm, the location of the lock key on the top end does not add convenience for everyday use. The device weighs 130 grams. On the right side there are separate volume keys, but the left one is empty. On the top edge, as already mentioned, there is a power key and a 3.5 mm audio jack, and on the bottom, closer to the right corner, there is a MicroUSB connector. The back cover is made of soft-touch plastic and fits tightly, but creaks when you press lightly on the left side of the manufacturer's logo. In addition to the manufacturer's logo, on the back cover there is a second microphone, a 5 MP camera peephole and a flash. Under the cover there is a battery with a capacity of 2100 mAh, a slot for MicroSD and MicroSIM cards. The interesting thing is that the plastic under the back cover is translucent.

The smartphone uses good materials, and in addition to high-quality soft-touch plastic, you can also find metal parts. Metal plates cover both speakers, as well as the right and left sides of the display.

In terms of ergonomics, there is an inconvenience due to the location of the power key on the top end. The LED indicator is nothing more than for show, since it is possible to notice that it is active only at a certain angle, and it also lacks brightness. But the use of soft-touch plastic has a positive effect on the ease of use of the smartphone, since it does not tend to slip out.

Operating system and shell

The smartphone operates on the basis operating system Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Thanks to HTC's own Sense 5.0 add-on and Blink Feed, not a trace remains of the standard Google shell.

Unlocking your smartphone is done by dragging the lock tab up. From the lock screen you can quickly go to the phone book, messages, browser, camera. But that’s not all: without unlocking your smartphone, you can pull the curtain and view missed events or go to the switches of the main operating modes. After unlocking the smartphone, we are taken to the Blink Feed. It consists of rectangles that display messages from social networks: Twitter, Facebook, gallery and calendar data. There is also the ability to select sources from popular news feeds. If you wish, you can set any other desktop window as the main window, but by default the main screen is the Blink Feed.

In general, the shell on the HTC Desire 601 does not have any changes compared to HTC One mini and HTC One Dual SIM. Just like on devices from the One line, to get to the shell settings you need to pull the top block of the Blink Feed down. Here you can choose one of six screen lock styles, change the background image, ringtone, notification sound and alarm. In addition to the settings, you can find the “tips and help” item, which will allow you to forget about where the instructions are, since they are always with you. The HTC Sense 5.0 shell pleased us with its smoothness and thoughtfulness. All actions are accompanied by beautiful animation, making using the smartphone a pleasure.

Hardware platform

The smartphone is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 hardware platform, like its close relative HTC One mini. The processor consists of two Krait 200 computing cores, the maximum frequency of which is 1.4 GHz. The graphics accelerator is Adreno 305. The amount of RAM is 1 GB, of which about 450 MB is free when the task list is empty. But the volume of its own memory is 8 GB and 4.5 GB is already available. Unlike HTC One mini, they did not forget about the slot for MicroSD memory cards.

In terms of performance, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 can be compared with NVIDIA Tegra 3 and MediaTek MT6589T, but it is worth remembering that both competitors are quad-core. The performance of this solution is enough for Asphalt 8 to run at medium graphics settings. Like most smartphones, the HTC Desire 601 heats up when playing games, but this is not critical, since the heating is not strong. The connection quality is good. The microphone is sensitive and the speaker is loud. The sound in the headphones is high-quality, although the smartphone does not support Beats Audio. HTC Desire 601 also boasts stereo speakers that produce high-quality stereo sound. If we compare the sound quality and volume of multimedia speakers with other smartphones, among which only the Nexus 4 and Xiaomi Mi2 were at hand, then the HTC Desire 601 wins outright. When connected mobile internet GPS satellites are picked up quickly. There are no complaints about Wi-Fi either. In the settings you can select the Wi-Fi frequency band: auto, 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz. There are many settings available to help reduce power consumption.

Autonomy

The device is equipped with a battery with a capacity of 2100 mAh. If we take into account that the processor is far from the most powerful, we can assume that the results should be quite good. The smartphone can easily last a day of active use, and with a more gentle mode, it can work for two days.

The Antutu Tester battery testing program returned a score of 583, and the test itself lasted just over three hours. This result is comparable to that of the HTC One mini.

Display

HTC Desire 601 is equipped with a 4.5-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 960x540. The pixel density is 245 PPI. There is an oleophobic coating that makes it very easy to get rid of fingerprints on the display.

Display brightness can vary from a maximum of 450 cd/m² to a minimum of 15 cd/m², with an average value of 140 cd/m². Minimum brightness allows you to use your smartphone at night without unnecessary eye strain. In the sun the screen performs well, the information remains readable.

But it was not without its shortcomings. Unfortunately, the display has a slightly uneven backlight. This is especially visible in the dark against a dark background. The unevenness of the backlight, or rather the glare, is formed in the places where the hardware touch keys are illuminated - they are the reason for this. During daylight hours, the illumination unevenness is not visible.

Cameras

The smartphone is equipped with two cameras: a main 5 MP and a front 0.3 MP. If front-camera is only suitable for Skype, then one could expect more from the main camera, because the manufacturer’s website states that it uses a BSI sensor with an f/2.0 aperture. There is HTC Zoe mode. We will not dwell on the settings in more detail, since they are quite standard. On paper everything looks attractive, but in practice everything is not so rosy. Photo quality is average. Not only is the HDR mode not fast when shooting, but it also overexposes the photo. The smartphone is capable of shooting video with Full HD resolution, as well as slow-motion video in a resolution of 768x432. You can evaluate photos and videos using the examples below. HTC Desire 601 is a mid-price smartphone. Among the advantages, it is worth noting a high-quality case, a good display, the HTC Sense 5.0 interface and high-quality sound from stereo speakers. The disadvantages include the display resolution and the location of the power key. The Taiwanese company HTC needs no introduction - it is one of the leading smartphone manufacturers that has long earned an excellent reputation. The Desire 601 model, kindly provided to us by the Yulmart cybermarket, belongs to the mid-budget Desire series, just like the HTC Desire 300 that was in the laboratory.

The hero of the review is the older model in its line (for now, its successor with index 610 has already been announced). For a price of around 10,000 rubles, we are offered a smartphone with a 4.5" screen and qHD resolution (960 x 640), built on the Snapdragon 400 SoC, has two front stereo speakers and supports fourth-generation LTE networks.

The combination of characteristics is interesting (if not peculiar). In addition to what has already been listed, we also note support for memory cards and not the worst battery capacity; but at the same time – not very “advanced” cameras, especially the front one.

The smartphone also comes in a dual-SIM version. Such a smartphone will cost 500–1000 rubles more. For those who need it - a good assortment offer. But during testing we had a regular, single-SIM version.

Let's start our review of HTC Desire 601, as usual, with packaging and delivery.

Packaging and accessories

HTC Desire 601 comes in a fairly large square white box made of thin but dense cardboard.

The front side of the package shows the smartphone itself; the back side of the package contains information about the characteristics and configuration of the device in Russian. Separate inscriptions notify us that the packaging is environmentally friendly, and the inscriptions and images on it are printed with soy ink.

Inside, the first thing we are greeted with is the smartphone itself in shipping plastic.

And all the included accessories are hidden underneath. HTC Desire 601 comes with:

  • Charger (TC E250, 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz, 0.2 A; 5 V, 1.0 A);
  • Micro-USB cable;
  • A simple wired stereo headset;
  • Quick user guide and warranty card.

The equipment of the device is not particularly rich, but everything you need is present. This means that the main thing here is the smartphone itself. Well, the HTC Desire 601 test will show everything.

Appearance and design

The smartphone is made in a classic form factor - a candy bar with a touch screen. Its dimensions by the standards of modern shovel-like flagships can be called quite acceptable: 134.5 x 66.7 x 9.9 mm. The same applies to the mass - 130 g.

In terms of design, the “mid-ranger” tries to resemble the flagship – HTC One. And, I must say, he does it well. The smartphone looks very neat, although its body is made entirely of plastic.

Front inserts above and below the screen are finished in brushed metal; and the back cover and sides are covered with soft-touch coating.

The device is not distinguished by either particularly narrow frames or any record-breaking modest thickness. But thanks to the not very large screen, convenient shape and grippy plastic, it is comfortable to hold, and the grip is reliable. Yes, and it’s quite possible to operate a smartphone with one hand if you wish.

Another advantage of such a case is that it gets dirty less: the cover of the HTC Desire 601 collects fingerprints, but they are not too noticeable and can be easily removed.

With the screen coating, everything is as good as it can be with glass: there is an oleophobic coating and it copes with its duties normally; if you wipe it regularly, there will be no problems. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 2.

HTC Desire 601 is available in three colors: black, white and red. We received a black smartphone for testing.

On the front side at the top there are: a speaker behind a large grid of holes in the case, light and proximity sensors, a front camera and an LED indicator.

The latter - the scourge of all HTCs since the One X - is hidden under the speaker grille, which is why it is not visible from any angle. And then the brightness of the LED failed.

For example, in the photo above it is actually on fire, but it is impossible to notice it from this angle. The indicator becomes visible only if you hover directly over the smartphone:

The LED glows orange continuously when connected. charger, and with new notifications it blinks green. The indicator is customizable: in the HTC Sense menu you can choose which events it will notify the smartphone owner about.

The earpiece also serves as a calling speaker - and is duplicated at the bottom by another one of the same type. Above the latter there is a block of two touch keys “Home” and “Back” - to the right and left of the central manufacturer logo. Here again is a repetition of an unsuccessful solution, this time appearing in HTC One. Design-by-design, but the “Menu” button on the front panel is more necessary than the brand logo. The two keys that are there please with good sensitivity, but the backlight could be brighter and more uniform.

On the back of the smartphone at the top there is a peephole for the five-megapixel main camera and a single LED flash. Why the designers decided to focus on the lens, highlighting it with a wide rim, is a mystery, since the smartphone cannot boast of outstanding characteristics in this regard.

In the center is a large, but very neatly executed and not conspicuous HTC logo.

On the left side of the Desire 601 there are separate volume keys.

The right one is empty - the power/lock button, by analogy with some other smartphones from the manufacturer, is located on top. Many people criticize HTC for this, but I personally don’t find this button placement inconvenient. Unlike the absence of a third key on the front panel and the unsuccessful implementation of the indicator, we will not write this down as a design flaw.

Otherwise, everything is standard: a 3.5 mm jack on top, a Micro-USB port on the bottom of the device.

The build quality is excellent: before reading the instructions, I generally had the feeling that the device was not disassembled - the back cover was so tightly fitted to the body. True, this is a double-edged sword: removing the back cover here is an extremely non-trivial process. You can get the hang of it, but, for example, I wouldn’t recommend trying to open the back cover with frozen hands in the cold - this risks breaking the phone.

In calm conditions, it is enough to carefully pry it near the Micro-USB connector, and the cover snaps off. Underneath it is a 2100 mAh battery (3.8 V, 7.98 W), a Micro-SIM card slot and a MicroSD card slot.

Otherwise, I repeat, the quality of assembly and materials does not cause the slightest criticism: everything is done very well, without a single hint of play, without extraneous creaks - the performance here is almost better than that of the flagships of the HTC One series.

The smartphone looks great and fits comfortably in the hand. But with technical characteristics everything is not so good. Let's start testing from the screen.

The smartphone's body proportions, speakers and touch keys are reminiscent of the HTC One.

The body material of Desire 601 is polycarbonate. In terms of its structure and tactile sensations, the Desire 601 case is very similar to the One X case.

The Desire 601 comes in white (with silver bezel), black and red.

The smartphone has BoomSound stereo speakers with sound amplifiers. This means that it, on a par with One and One mini, will be able to work with .

The device is equipped with a standard camera, without enlarged pixels. The pixel size in the sensor is 1.4 nm instead of 2 nm in the “ulta-pixel” camera of older models. But the lens parameters allow us to hope for photographs of acceptable quality.

With a screen diagonal of 4.5 inches, the phone is slightly smaller in size than the 4.7-inch one, but larger than the 4.3-inch one. The resolution of 960 by 540 pixels is unlikely to inspire tech geeks, but it will be sufficient for the average user with standard everyday tasks.

The device runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with the proprietary HTC Sense 5.0 software interface. It contains BlinkFeed and HTC Zoe.

Photos of HTC Desire 601

Consider the HTC Desire 601 in black.

HTC simultaneously has representatives in two price segments of Android phones. The first price range - high-end smartphones - is represented by the One line represented by HTC One, One Max and One mini, which differ from each other in size. Meanwhile, the second price zone – budget smartphones – is also represented by three models HTC phones, namely the Desire series. In our opinion, the Desire 300 is too limited in terms of specifications and features, while the Desire 500 is a slightly better, but not very impressive phone. It remains to be seen how much the new 601 will manage to raise the bar. We hope our HTC review Desire 601 will help you figure out what's what.

Design and screen

From a distance, HTC Desire 601 can be mistaken for another representative of the line. But taking a closer look, some differences in the appearance of the devices become noticeable. In particular, the 601 model has two speakers on the front panel along the screen (top and bottom of the display), while the Desire 300 and 500 have only one speaker. In addition, the smartphone also supports the capabilities of the well-known HTC BoomSound technology. Although, it is worth noting that, despite the provision of surround sound, its quality is not at such a high level as that of One series smartphones. And when you try to increase the sound volume, high-frequency sound tones begin to dominate. Of course, this sound quality cannot be called terrifying, it is quite decent, but, nevertheless, if you need more expressive sound, you will have to worry about choosing good headphones.

The silver stripes above and below the screen where the speakers are located give the impression of metal, but in fact they are made of plastic. The back panel is finished with a matte rubberized material, which not only gives it a certain attractiveness appearance, but also improves grip. The curved side panels make it easier to hold the phone in your hand. The phone is offered in three colors, but in our opinion, the white version looks the most stylish. The black back panel looks a bit dull.

On the right side panel there are volume buttons made of silver plastic, although at first glance they appear to be metal. On the top edge there is a regular headphone jack and a button to turn the device on/off; microUSB port on the bottom.

Below the screen there are only two touch buttons: Back and Home, between which the company has placed its logo, which gives the misleading impression of an additional key. Applications are launched by double-clicking the button to go to the Home page. The placement of two speaker grilles on the front panel forced the developers to expand the frame framing the display, which in turn affects the overall dimensions of the phone. The front panel of the Desire 601 is not limited to just the screen, despite the fact that most smartphone manufacturers are trying to equip their devices with displays with a maximum diagonal, without increasing the dimensions of the phone. New smartphone HTC is characterized by a screen diagonal of 4.5 inches, and its body dimensions are 66.7 x 134.5 x 9.9 mm (W x H x D) and weighs 130 g.

The HTC Desire 601 screen provides a resolution of 960x540 pixels, which corresponds to 245 dots per inch. It's not the highest resolution, and isn't exactly suitable for regular book reading, email and web browsing, as text doesn't look very sharp. There are many offers in the current market that provide decent screen resolution even for less money. For example, it has a display with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels, and is cheaper than Desire 601. However, let's continue HTC Desire 601 review and let's move into the interior of the smartphone

Key features and performance of HTC Desire 601

The tested smartphone supports a 4G connection, which means it will be appreciated by those who often download a lot of media files to their phone, although it should be remembered that the downloaded files should not be in too large a format, for example, movies. But, in any case, the phone coped with audio files normally - loading them onto the 601 was carried out with lightning speed.

From 8 GB available internal memory Only 4.4 GB remain available for personal use. But the phone has a slot for a microSD card, which will allow you, if desired, to expand the amount of flash memory, which can be accessed by removing the back cover, and you don’t even need to remove the battery for this, which is very convenient.

The main volume of preloaded data is occupied by applications of the operating system 4.2 with Sense skin from HTC. It should be noted that many people buy HTC devices solely because they have the company's own skin, which provides a number of additional user functions. One of the main aspects of the current version of Sense is the BlinkFeed service, which takes up almost the entire home screen and brings together all the news from your social network account and news from the Internet. In other words, it's an endless feed of news from various sources, including updates to your personal social media feeds. The service allows you to select the country from which you are interested in news, as well as the headings or categories of news that you want to follow, and BlinkFeed displays news from these categories. Unfortunately, the choice of categories is limited, for example, not all sports are represented, and such a heading as “TV News” is too broad; there is hardly a person who will be interested in absolutely all the news from the world of television.

Otherwise, the phone's interface is more than simple; the menu contains standard modes, themes, widgets, types of folders and wallpapers. It will take you no more than a couple of tens of minutes to fully understand it.

Powered by a 1.4GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM, the phone handled app launches and support well without any hiccups or lags. There are also no complaints about the responsiveness of the screen; the response to touches is literally lightning fast. Playback of multimedia files is also quite tolerable. Supported formats are 3GP, 3G2, MP4, WMV, AVI for video and MP3, AAC, WAV, WMA for audio files.

Camera

HTC Desire 601, like most modern phones, is equipped with two cameras at once - on the front and rear panels devices. The front VGA camera located at the top above the display is used to provide video calls; although, of course, its resolution will not allow you to take photographs of more or less decent quality.

The main camera, located at the top of the rear panel, is a 5-megapixel sensor. The images captured with it can be described as satisfactory, and are quite suitable for sharing on social networks, for example. Plus – video recording in HD format (1920×1080) is supported. HTC's Zoe feature allows you to automatically shoot a 30-second video of your daily life, with the ability to select the best frame from the footage. Among the shortcomings, we note the not very user-friendly interface of the camera application, which forces you to constantly scroll through the menu in search of the desired option.

Regarding the duration battery life, it significantly improved the battery compared to the Desire 300. During the testing period, the battery capacity of 2100 mAh was enough for at least a day of operation in average use. And using the energy-saving mode allows you to increase this time.

Verdict on HTC Desire 601

I wasn't too impressed with the HTC Desire 300, which is not surprising, considering that the Desire line just started with this model. Desire 601, being the flagship smartphone of this series, looks a little better. Among the advantages, it is worth noting 4G support and battery capacity, but the screen resolution and pseudo-metallic body parts are disadvantages. In general, the phone is normal, corresponds to its price category and contains everything that users expect to see in modern communication devices. On this HTC Desire 601 review finished, keep track of new reviews on our website.

I don’t understand why, with each smartphone, the differences between the One and Desire lines are erased, bringing smartphones under a common denominator. After all, once upon a time representatives of the Desire and One line were in completely different categories, but now One mini and Desire 601 are almost identical. The main difference is the body, as well as the display and price. During the course of the review, I would be interested to figure out whether someone needs One mini with a live Desire 601. Whoever is with me, please see cat.

Design and ergonomics

At first glance, it seems that the smartphone belongs to the One line, but when you pick it up and realize that the back cover is plastic, there is only one option left - Desire. Stereo speakers, which used to be an advantage exclusively of the One line, have now migrated to this device. Otherwise, it's still the same good old Desire. It’s strange, but at first you could hear some noises similar to interference from the earpiece in standby mode (this passed with time). In addition to stereo speakers, in front, as usual, there are sensors, a front camera and two touch keys.

On the back there is a solid soft touch, with the exception of an additional microphone, flash, camera and a hefty edging around it. Bottom - Micro USB, top - lock button and headphone jack. On the right are two separate volume control buttons.

The case is collapsible. By the way, removing the cover is quite difficult. Under the hood there is a removable battery, a slot for Micro SIM and Micro SD cards. The smartphone fits perfectly in the hand due to its small width. My test sample has a lot of different gaps and squeaks, but, knowing HTC, they corrected all this in store samples. But I’m not sure about the tactile response of the keys, since in One mini, for example, the keys responded unclearly.

Display

Looking at the characteristics, the first thing that comes to mind is: “Probably the display is the weakest side of this device. This is partly true. In fact, a good matrix is used here. Diagonal - 4.5 inches, resolution - qHD (960 x 540). Viewing angles are maximum and there is no color inversion. Perhaps this will not surprise anyone now, but the air gap of the display is so small that the image lies literally on the surface. This makes the interaction significantly more pleasant compared to other devices. The colors are a little brighter than natural.

Cameras

The smartphone has two cameras. The front one is VGA, it is enough for video calls and photography with friends, but only in good lighting. The main camera is 5 MP. The matrix is definitely better than the similar one in Galaxy Nexus, For example. With good lighting everything is fine, but with insufficient lighting, detail decreases and noise suddenly appears. I don't know why the designers emphasized the camera. Show off your camera this device no need to.

Specifications and software

The smartphone runs on Android 4.2.2 with the proprietary Sense 5 shell. The shell is probably one of the nicest to date, but it seems to me that too much is cluttered here, so I prefer bare Android. And I'm looking forward to the fact that Google Play The Google Experience launcher will appear as a separate application, which can be installed on any smartphone in a couple of clicks. In Sense 5, HTC focuses on its services and features, such as BlinkFeed, BoomSound and Zoe. Most of our readers have long known about the innovations in Sense 5, for the rest I will repeat it. The first “trick” is Zoe, main feature which is the combination and editing of individual sections of the photo. It works like this: after pressing the shutter button, you will receive a small video that consists of several photos. Thanks to this, for example, you can later remove unnecessary objects from a photo or open the eyes of a blinked person. It sounds good, but in practice I didn’t want to use it, since it all looks quite complicated.
The second feature of the shell is an analogue of HTC's Flipboard called BlinkFeed. By default, Blinkfeed is set as the main desktop, which is unlikely to be convenient for anyone. Fortunately, you can change the table without any problems, but it is impossible to remove Blinkfeed from it. Another option is to throw it away. The functionality of the service is simple - reading news and posts from social networks. You cannot add your own sources, you can only select some of the available ones.

And the third, most important and necessary feature is BoomSound - a set of hardware and software for sound improvement, as well as two cool stereo speakers on the front panel.

This miracle runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with a frequency of 1.4 GHz, Adreno 305 video core, 1 GB of RAM and 8 built-in (which would obviously not be enough, but the device supports MicroSD memory cards up to 64 GB). There is also enough RAM for all tasks and comfortable work. The HTC One mini has similar hardware, so the performance is identical, but the 601 wins due to the memory card. Battery capacity is 2100 mAh, which is 300 mAh more than in One mini.
