Sometimes it happens that when working on a car there is a need to dismantle the crankshaft. And if an experienced car enthusiast can do this work within an hour, then for a beginner such an operation can be a real discovery and surprise. Below we will describe to you in detail how to carry out such work correctly and in the shortest possible time.

Reasons for dismantling the crankshaft

Dismantling the crankshaft on a VAZ-2114 may be required in the following cases:

  • The reason that comes first most often is replacing the timing belt and other work , which are somehow connected with the gas distribution mechanism. Work should be carried out in accordance with the regulations, or if the mechanism fails.
  • Another reason for dismantling is the crankshaft. They are changed when oil leaks occur in the places where they are installed.

Pulley fastening

On all VAZ-2114 vehicles without exception, the crankshaft pulley is fixed with a massive bolt, which can cause problems when removed.

A curved spanner wrench is good for fixing.

  • First of all, this is due to its location, since it is difficult to securely and securely fasten the key or socket head.
  • Secondly, even if you managed to position the key correctly, To dismantle it you will have to make every effort. This is due to the fact that at the factory it is tightened as tightly as possible in order to avoid the facts of self-unwinding. Also not with the best side to unscrew it, the right-hand thread may become, which during operation only screws the pulley in tighter and causes the part to stick.

When performing work to remove it, it is best to keep WD-40 on hand.

Tool for getting the job done

To make the work easier, you need to prepare the following tool:

  • Jack.
  • Wheel chocks.
  • Pry bar and flat blade screwdrivers.
  • A set of keys.
  • Socket heads and extension.

It is best to carry out such work on a lift or inspection pit.

Step-by-step procedure for removing the crankshaft pulley on a VAZ-2114

Before you begin dismantling the crankshaft pulley, you need to unscrew some components and parts on the VAZ-2114.

When the flywheel is secured, you can proceed to dismantling the crankshaft pulley.

Removing the VAZ crankshaft pulley is a rather complicated operation, especially if you are doing it for the first time. When dismantling, it is especially important that the keyway is not damaged. Using specialized mechanisms will help you quickly complete the replacement - and if they are not available, the task can be completed using other methods. In this review we will talk about dismantling the crankshaft pulley and replacing oil seals on a VAZ car.

What is a pulley

The crankshaft pulley is a rotating wheel that is driven by the crankshaft. The operation of many systems in your car that receive energy from the engine depends on it.

Did you know?The first pulleys were used in Mesopotamia in 1500 BC. e. With their help, buckets of water were raised to the royal gardens. The belt drive was provided by vines and ropes.

It powers the generator, gas distribution mechanism, car air conditioning and pump. If you need to install a new oil seal, you will need to remove the pulley.

Dismantling is also possible if the pulley itself is damaged. They can be very different, and different cars have their own characteristics of this part.

Kinds

The era of automobile manufacturing knew cars of varying degrees of complexity and several design solutions independent from each other:

Belts can fail under the influence of weather conditions (sudden temperature changes), mechanical loads and aggressive environments. Therefore, if defects appear, the pulley may need to be replaced. Replacement will also be needed if the crankshaft seals have failed (you notice an oil leak).

Important!An oil leak is possible not only because of the oil seal. Insufficient viscosity or increased fluidity of the oil itself is also possible. This happens if the oil used does not meet the technical conditions of the engine.

How to remove the crankshaft pulley on a VAZ

Structurally, in VAZ cars, the pulley is secured with a massive bolt - it is its removal that can cause a problem. The difficulty comes from the location of the bolt: you need to position the key correctly and apply force, which is difficult.

And even if you did this, the bolt could have become stuck, making it difficult to remove. Strong factory fixation is made to prevent the bolt from self-unscrewing. Further use of the car can lead to even greater fixation.

Unscrewing hard-to-get bolts will be easier if you have WD-40 technical spray on hand. The spray is used to loosen rusted bolts, stuck bolts, etc.

Required Tools

To withdraw you will need:

  • anti-recoil stops;
  • lift;
  • mounts;
  • a set of wrenches for 38 or 36 and 10;
  • screwdrivers.
Work is carried out on a lift or in an inspection pit.

Important!Before proceeding with dismantling, check the crankcase ventilation system. If it is contaminated, then under the influence of excess gas pressure, even a serviceable oil seal begins to leak lubricant.

Stages of work

To begin dismantling, place the VAZ on the repair site or above the inspection hole and immobilize the car.

  1. Remove the cover that covers the wires of the units to provide access to those engine parts that need to be replaced.
  2. Loosen the tension on the drive chain and remove everything that might be in the way: the electric generator, the power steering belt.
  3. Now you need to loosen the bolt that secures the pulley using the starter. To do this, a 36 or 38 socket wrench is placed on the nut with an emphasis on the stabilizer and securely fixed. Turn the ignition key sharply and the starter will break the nut. If you were unable to do this the first time, start the starter again.
  4. All that remains is to unscrew the nut.

Before removing the pulley:
  1. Removing the wheel.
  2. Remove the air filter unit and the mudguard.
  3. Loosen the nut on the generator.
  4. Loosen the alternator belt tension nut and bolt.
  5. Loosen and remove the generator drive belt.
  6. Now the pulley can be removed quite simply, with a few movements. It can also be removed with a removable device. When removing, be careful not to damage the keyway. A loose fit of the part in the groove will significantly accelerate its wear.

Replacing the oil seal

When moving on to dismantling and replacing oil seals, proceed as follows:

  1. Using a #10 wrench, unscrew all the bolts and nuts that secure the drive cover to the pan.
  2. Now, together with the gasket, remove the drive cover.
  3. Remove any remaining gasket.
  4. Using a screwdriver and a punch, knock out the oil seal from the inside of the drive cover.
  5. The drive cover must be washed. Gasoline or diesel fuel can be used for this.
  6. The oil seal is lubricated on top with silicone sealant.
  7. Carefully place it in place and press down.
  8. Remove excess sealant from the cover and oil seal with a rag.
  9. The lid also needs to be wiped with a rag.
  10. Now you can apply the fixing sealant in two ways - on the cover or on the block. The sealant is applied to the cover along the contour if you can immediately install it correctly; If this does not work out for you, then apply sealant to the block.
  11. Before installation, wipe the installation area with a rag; There should be no gasket residue or contamination present.
  12. Place the cover at an angle on the tray and put it in place on the guide pins.
  13. Tighten the cover, starting with the three tray bolts, and then move on to the main ones.
  14. Don't tighten the bolts all at once, just tighten them all and then tighten them.
  15. Now wash the pulley in the same way as you did the cover before.
  16. To simply install the pulley, note where you have the key on the piece and center it correctly.
  17. The pulley is installed by twisting.
  18. If it suddenly does not sit in place, slightly unscrew the cover bolts, push the part and then screw it back.

Video: how to remove the crankshaft pulley Now all that remains is to install all the parts and mechanisms in their places. By screwing the nut into place, it can be placed on a layer of sealant. This is done so that it does not loosen if you suddenly do not twist it very tightly.

Did you know?According to Plutarch, Archimedes managed to move an entire ship with the soldiers on it using a complex system of pulleys. Now such systems can power an entire plant from a single turbine.

Thus, replacing the oil seal is not particularly difficult. You can see for yourself if you perform all the steps carefully and consistently.

If you are faced with the problem of how to unscrew the crankshaft pulley bolt, this article is for you. We will describe this process in detail so that you can quickly and easily remove the crankshaft pulley and then begin repairing it.

How to remove a crankshaft pulley bolt: why is everything so complicated?

A knowledgeable motorist usually spends no more than a quarter of an hour on the process of dismantling the crankshaft pulley. But inexperienced drivers, when trying to remove this part on their own, are faced with many problems that they often simply cannot solve. The instructions for carrying out repair work and maintenance of any modern vehicle contain comprehensive information about the dismantling process, but, unfortunately, it does not help car enthusiasts.

First of all, difficulties arise with fixation. It is very difficult to dismantle it if the part is constantly rotating, “slipping” out of your hands. It is also not clear to many from which side to approach the bolt that holds the pulley. And its strong tightening usually makes the process of removing the unit very, very difficult, since dismantling under such conditions is fraught with damage to the body covering or elements of the car’s engine compartment.

All car manufacturers and car service specialists use great force to tighten a nut or bolt (on some vehicle models the mechanism is held on a bolt, on others on a nut).

This is done specifically to avoid self-unwinding of this part during vehicle operation. If a bolt (nut) falls out while driving, it will not be easy to bring the car back to life in order to continue driving it, and the repair itself will cost, believe me, a pretty penny. In addition, the described fasteners increase their tightening level independently when the engine is running. And the final “indestructibility” of the bolt is given by the phenomena of coking, sticking, and corrosion.

How to unscrew the crankshaft pulley bolt - solving the problem

The pulleys of front-wheel drive cars are usually secured with a bolt. In such vehicles, the pulley is oriented perpendicular to the axis of the machine, which, of course, complicates repair work (it is very difficult to get to the fastening). To unscrew the bolt as quickly and easily as possible, it is advisable to prepare in advance:

  • set of auto tools;
  • the so-called “stump” (or “tragus”);
  • car jack;
  • head (socket) with a lever and extension (the head must be selected according to the size of the bolt).

The process with these devices is as follows:

  • remove the wheel (of course, before doing this you need to lift the front right part of the car with a jack);
  • we install the vehicle on the “stump”;
  • remove the engine shield, which protects it from dirt, the air filter (they are located on the top side of the hood) and the generator belt;
  • open the plug on the clutch block so that you can fix the crankshaft, and wedge the flywheel teeth using a pry bar;
  • We put the head on the bolt and begin to unscrew it (if it does not give in, we slowly increase the length of the lever).

I think there is no need to talk about how to tighten the crankshaft pulley and return the car to its pre-repair condition. All operations are performed in reverse order.

How to unscrew the crankshaft pulley nut?

This procedure is easier to perform using a lever and an extension for it (you can use a relatively long piece of pipe), as well as a socket or socket wrench (38 or 36). A nut, called a “ratchet,” is usually used to secure pulleys on rear-wheel drive vehicles. Such a nut usually has special ledges.

To remove it, you need to get under the car and try to unscrew the element with a wrench and extension. In cases where it absolutely does not lend itself, the gearbox should be put in neutral, the spark plugs should be removed, the key with the lever rested on the side member or the floor, and an impulse should be given by turning the ignition switch. After this procedure, the nut easily comes off on the first or second try.

Why are special technological holes made in pulleys? In auto repair shops, there is a special device for fixing the shaft, which must be bolted to the pulley and the shaft locked.

If there is no special device for fixing the shaft, which is screwed to the pulley, then you need to install good anti-roll devices under the wheels of the car and put 4th gear on the gearbox.

Or, the third option is to rest a pry bar against the flywheel teeth and fix the crankshaft from turning while unscrewing the pulley nut.

Another option is to insert a pin into the pulley hole, and install a pry bar on the pin and the second stop, as in this figure.

How to unscrew the crankshaft pulley

Depending on the design of the crankshaft, the pulley is attached to it either with a nut or a bolt. On rear-wheel drive vehicles, the pulley is usually secured with a nut.
The engines of some rear-wheel drive cars can be started with a special crank, for which special protrusions are made for engaging the crank. This handle is also called a “crooked wrench,” and the engagement for this wrench is called a ratchet.

The pulley fastening nut is installed with a size of 36 or 38 mm on a wrench. Use a socket wrench. The key is strengthened by welding a long handle or putting on a tube to increase the “shoulder”.

How to unscrew the pulley nut:

  1. Place the car on a pit or overpass.
  2. Apply the hand parking brake.
  3. Turn on 4th gear at the gearbox, put chocks under the wheels.
  4. Do not tap too hard on the edges of the nut.
  5. Throw on a socket wrench, extend it with a pipe and remove the stuck nut.

If the pulley nut does not come off:

  1. Move the gearbox handle to neutral.
  2. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs to prevent the engine from starting.
  3. Place a socket wrench on the nut and extend it with a pipe. Place the wrench in such a way that the pipe rests against the ground or the machine spar on the right side to prevent the pulley from turning clockwise.
  4. We make a couple of short sharp turns of the ignition key to turn on the starter. The starter will begin to rotate the flywheel, the flywheel will rotate the crankshaft, and the pulley will be secured with a key. In this case, the stuck nut usually “comes off” quickly.

The crankshaft pulley on front-wheel drive vehicles is generally secured with a bolt. To remove the crankshaft pulley of a front-wheel drive car, you must proceed in this order:

  1. Raise the front right side of the car with a jack. Place a trestle, stump or a pair of wheels with rims.
  2. Remove the wheel.
  3. Dismantle and remove the air filter with housing.
  4. Remove the protective cover.
  5. Loosen the belt tensioner and remove the alternator belt.
  6. To fix the crankshaft, you need to remove the plug in the clutch housing, then insert a pry bar into the hole and rest it between the flywheel teeth.
  7. Now you need to put on the socket wrench, extend it with a pipe and sharply try to turn it counterclockwise. The main thing is to remove the stuck pulley bolt.

If it is not possible to remove the bolt from its place, then we use the method of unscrewing it with a starter. This method is shown above.

Helpful advice from locksmiths who have seen a lot: use solvent or WD-40, or a similar rust preventative. After spraying it on the thread (if the pulley is secured with a nut), you need to wait 15 minutes, then try to unscrew it. If it’s a bolt, then it’s not easy to apply this product to the threads, although if you spray it around the bolt, it’s possible that liquid will pass through the micro-cracks and decarbonize the joint.

Pulley removal

Unscrewing a fastening bolt or nut is only half the battle. Next you need to pull the pulley out of the shaft. The pulley cannot be removed easily by hand unless its seat is broken. In addition, if the pulley fits tightly onto the shaft, it is also secured against turning by a key.

There are special pullers for removing the pulley from the shaft. There are mechanical and hydraulic pullers.

The design of a mechanical puller is simple. Usually it has three legs, with which you need to hook the pulley itself, and rest the central rod against the shaft. After which, you need to rotate the rod, the legs will straighten and pull the pulley towards you. There are even simpler pullers that you can make yourself.
If there is no removable device for the pulley, then you can use pry bars. If one person is filming, then take turns, moving it a little on each side so that there is no distortion. If there are two, then at the same time, from different sides, the pulley is pressed out from the crankshaft with a sharp movement.

It also happens that when using a puller, the walls of the pulley grooves cannot withstand and break off. Therefore, when using pry bars, they must be engaged as close to the shaft as possible.

Installing the pulley on the crankshaft

In order to reinstall the pulley on the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine, you need to check the seats. If there are burrs or burrs, remove them with an emery stone. If the old pulley easily fits onto the shaft, then such a pulley is not suitable. It should fit tightly and be pressed in with a certain amount of effort. Before installing the pulley, to reduce friction, it must be lubricated with oil or lithol.

The method of removing a pulley very often depends on the type of fit and the type of mechanical interface. In most cases, it is enough to tap the diametrically opposite ends of the pulley with a hammer to get it out of its seat, but time and corrosion can play a cruel joke. In this case, you cannot do without appropriate techniques and devices.

Removing Mechanical Pulleys

Low-power engines often have a splined pulley fit without pressing. In these cases, the pulley is kept from moving by means of a retaining ring or washer, or a threaded connection. In these cases, it is enough to unscrew the fixing nuts and remove the locking ring. Reusable rings with a jagged edge can also be used, which will either have to be cut down or take a long time to align at the installation site with an awl and a screwdriver.

Thermal pulley removal

Sometimes to remove the pulley it is enough to heat it slightly. As the temperature rises, the metal expands, causing the degree of compression to weaken. If the pulley was mounted on the shaft using the preheating method, then the indicated removal procedure simply cannot be avoided: the diameter of the shaft is a fraction of a millimeter larger than the hole in the pulley, which is why the degree of pressing is too high.

The pulley is heated from the edges, gradually tapping it from different sides towards the end of the shaft. In this situation, indirect heating of the shaft cannot be allowed, otherwise it will also be subject to linear expansion and clamp the pulley even more. If overheating occurs, the connection must be allowed to cool and then repeat the procedure again. If the seat width is significant, several heating attempts may be required.

Removing a pulley using a puller

Often the pulley can be removed using a simple puller. It is a thick metal plate with a hole in the center. A large nut is welded coaxially to the hole to one of the planes of the plate. On one line passing through the central hole, slits of small thickness are made in the plate. To use the puller, you will also need a bolt that matches the size of the nut welded to the puller and two smaller bolts with large washers.

It is necessary to drill two holes into the pulley, located on a line passing through its center. In these holes, a thread is cut with a single-pass tap, and the bolts for the puller are selected according to the diameter. The electric motor shafts have a centering groove in which it is necessary to secure the ball from the bearing of the required size using thick lubricant. The central bolt of the puller will also have to be processed: a spherical recess must be made in its end.

The puller is attached to the pulley with bolts passing through the slots and screwed into the threaded holes. The central bolt rests against a ball fixed in the centering groove of the shaft. During the screwing process, the bolt will unlock the puller from the shaft, due to which the pulley will be moved from its seat. If the bolt travel is not enough to completely displace the pulley, several large nuts must be placed under the side bolts.
