What is the screen resolution of the Samsung Galaxy S5. Review of Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F). Everything is as it is! An operating system is a system software that manages and coordinates the operation of hardware components in a device

The iconic smartphone of last year was the Samsung S5 model SM-G900F. This device is at least appearance and is very similar to its predecessor, but it has a number of significant differences. It is its capabilities and characteristics that will be discussed further.

Positioning

Initially belonged to the premium class solutions S5 SM-G900F. This is truly a flagship device. Its characteristics and parameters are still relevant today. Although now a more advanced smartphone has appeared (we are talking about the flagship of 2015 - Samsung S6) from this Korean manufacturer, in terms of hardware and software parameters the difference between them is not so significant. Therefore, this gadget can still be attributed specifically to the premium segment. However, its value has dropped significantly over time. This nuance makes its purchase even more justified. Moreover, it will serve you for many more years and will become a faithful assistant in solving various problems, regardless of their level of complexity.

What do we get in the box upon purchase?

Although it is the flagship S5 device, its equipment is very modest. In addition to the battery and smartphone, it includes the following:

  • Interface cord.
  • Brief user manual (it also contains a warranty card).
  • Charger.

The case, protective film and memory card will have to be purchased separately for an additional fee. The same statement applies to speaker system. It's good if you have good headphones. If we don’t have them, we buy them right away. Moreover, to obtain good sound, they must have the proper quality.

Design

The S4 and S5 models of the SM-G900F have a lot in common. Most of the front panel in the S5 is occupied by a 5.1-inch display, which is protected by impact-resistant Gorilla Eye glass. IN this device its third generation is in use. Under the screen there is a typical control panel, which consists of 2 touch buttons (located on the edges of the device) and one mechanical button (located in the center of the panel). A fingerprint sensor is integrated into the same mechanical button. This innovation is one of the most important differences between the S4 and S5. Above the display are displayed: front-camera, distance, light and gesture sensors, LED event indicator and earpiece. On the left is the power button, and on the right is the volume control button. On the bottom edge of the smart phone there is a hole for a conversational microphone and a micro-USB format. At the top there is a port for connecting a stereo headset and a microphone for loud conversations. The back cover of the gadget usually houses the main camera, dual backlight and a loud speaker. It should also be noted that the housing protection level of this device is IP67. This allows it to be immersed under water to a depth of 0.5 meters and protects against possible dust penetration inside.

Semiconductor basis

Samsung SM-G900F is built on one of the best computing platforms for mobile devices- Snapdragon 801, which was developed by the leading manufacturer of AWS chips - Qualcomm. This processor consists of 4 modified computing cores based on the Krait 400 architecture. All of them are manufactured using a 28nm process technology and can be overclocked at peak performance up to 2.5 GHz. Now, a year after the start of sales of this gadget, there are still no devices in the middle segment whose performance level would correspond to the computing capabilities of this chip. The Snapdragon 801 can handle almost any task today without any problems. The only thing it will definitely have problems with is new 64-bit applications. All of its main registers can only process 32 bits per clock cycle. Hence the possible problems with the new software. But so far there are not so many such applications, and the transition process itself is not that fast.

Screen

The S5 SM-G900F boasts one of the best displays in its niche. Its diagonal is an impressive 5.1 inches even by today's standards. It is manufactured using the technology typical for this manufacturer - “SuperAMOLED”. Its resolution is 1920x1080. The image on it is displayed in Full HD format. The screen is protected, as noted earlier, by special impact-resistant glass “Gorilla Eye” of the third generation. The image quality on this screen is not satisfactory. Individual pixels on it are almost impossible to distinguish with the ordinary eye without special devices.

Graphics accelerator

The developers did not forget to equip the SM-G900F with a graphics accelerator. Galaxy devices are not always equipped with this component. This device has Adreno 330 installed. This video card is even now one of the top ones. If we add to this the relatively small display resolution of 1920x1080, then in general there are no problems with processing graphic information. This is quite enough to solve the most resource-intensive tasks today. The only problem may be processing new programs that are optimized to run 64-bit applications. They were already developed for the new hardware and definitely will not work on this graphics accelerator. So far there is very little such software, and the process itself, as already mentioned, is quite slow.

Cameras

It won't be difficult to save the brightest moments of your life on digital media using the main camera in the SM-G900F. It is based on a 16 megapixel sensor. There are many modes of its operation at the software level. All this allows you to get fairly high-quality images in almost any situation. There is also an autofocus system and, of course, dual LED illumination. This camera is also great when it comes to recording videos. It can record video in 2160p format with a refresh rate of 30 images per second. It is also possible to record in 1080p format, but in this case the number of images will double and reach 60 frames per second. The sensor of the front camera is more modest - 2 megapixels. This will be quite enough to make video calls. But the “selfies” obtained with its help will be of average quality.

Memory

The capacity of the integrated storage is identical for all Samsung SM-G900F devices - 16Gb. At the same time, part of it is occupied by pre-installed software, and about 11.5 GB are allocated for user needs. If used wisely, this should be enough for comfortable work on this device and there will be no shortage of free space. If the built-in Samsung Galaxy SM-G900F 16Gb, then you can increase the amount of memory using an external flash card. This device has the necessary slot and the maximum capacity of the external drive in this case can reach 128 GB. The RAM in this gadget is 2 GB. Of this, about half (that is, 1 GB) is used immediately by system processes. The rest of the RAM is allocated to the user to run his applications.

Gadget battery and autonomy

The undeniable advantage of the Samsung SM - G900 F is its autonomy. The device is equipped with a removable 2800 mAh battery. We add to this a screen with a diagonal of 5.1 inches and a resolution of 1920x1080, as well as a productive, but no less energy-efficient processor, and we get 2-3 days battery life at an average load level. If you watch a video in Full HD format or play a demanding toy, the indicated value will be reduced to 12 hours. You can, of course, use this device to a minimum, and in this case you can count on 4 days of battery life. But at the same time, the smartphone will turn into a regular “dialer” and will only be able to make calls and send and receive short text messages.

Data exchange

The S5 SM-G900F boasts a complete list of interfaces necessary for comfortable work. Everything is here.

  • The presence of two built-in Wi-Fi transmitters allows you to count on 300 Mbit/s if you have an appropriate router. Built-in support latest version"Wi-Fi" - "ac". The developers also did not forget about its rather old modification - “a”, which is still found on various types of devices. As a result, downloading large amounts of information to this smartphone using this wireless interface should definitely not be a problem.
  • This smartphone can function in almost all modern mobile networks. There is support for GSM (their speed is limited to 500 kb/sec), HSDPA (in such 3G networks the speed can theoretically reach 42 Mbit/sec) and LTE (in this case the speed will be higher and can reach 150 Mbit/sec.) .
  • The gadget also has Bluetooth. This transmitter allows you to output an audio signal to the system. You can also use it to exchange small photos or videos with similar smartphones. In some cases, synchronization with a PC is also possible using Bluetooth.
  • Using the infrared port installed in this smartphone and special software, you can easily turn it into a remote control for a music center, DVD player or TV.
  • This gadget supports two navigation systems at once: domestic GLONASS and international GPS. With their help, this “smart” phone can easily turn into a full-fledged navigator.
  • Another important wireless interface is NFC. Its presence allows you to transmit and receive large amounts of information from similar devices in a matter of minutes.
  • There are only two wired methods of transmitting information in this device: 3.5 mm audio jack and microUSB.

Software

Initially, the Samsung Galaxy SM-G900F operates under an operating system such as Android version 4.4. Since March of this year, an update to version 5.0 is available. Therefore, when you first connect to the World Wide Web, you can update the system software. On top of the operating system is installed a typical shell for this line of devices - TouchWiz UI. It is with the help of the latest software component that the user can optimize the interface of this gadget to suit his needs in a matter of minutes. Otherwise, the set of pre-installed software is standard: social clients, a set of mini-applications from Google and the usual set of programs built directly into the operating system itself.

The price of a smart phone today

The price of the Samsung S5 SM-G900F starts in dollars for the black version. The rest of its modifications - in white, gold and blue cases - cost approximately the same at the moment: from $430. For comparison, we can cite last year's flagship from Sony - Xperia Z3. With fairly similar technical parameters, it will cost much more - $460. Accordingly, the starting price of $400 makes the purchase of this device truly justified. At the same time, you get a truly high-quality and functional device.

Owners about the smartphone

Be that as it may, the main disadvantage, according to the majority of owners of the Galaxy S5 SM-G900F, is the 16Gb of built-in storage, of which the user can count on only 11.5 GB. This issue can be easily and simply resolved by installing an external flash card. It is, of course, not included in the package and will have to be purchased separately. Otherwise, this gadget boasts an impressive list of advantages:

  • Housing protected from moisture and dust.
  • Excellent and flawless main camera.
  • Very productive hardware platform.
  • A good degree of autonomy of the device.
  • An impressive set of supported interfaces.

Results

The SM-G900F boasts an ideal combination of price and quality. It has everything for convenient and comfortable work, and its characteristics will be relevant for many years to come. All this makes its purchase even now, a year after the start of sales, completely justified.

Another interesting hardware feature is download acceleration: the Galaxy S5 can simultaneously download data via Wi-Fi and LTE, increasing speed. This works if the remote server supports multi-threaded uploading of files from an arbitrary location. But since completely unlimited tariffs Since there is no LTE in our country, you need to use Download Booster with great caution: the speed gain will be noticeable only when downloading large files, and they will quickly use up the available gigabytes.

Display

The display of the Galaxy S5 has grown to a diagonal of 5.1 inches, while the body has also increased compared to the S4 - thicker frames had to be made due to water resistance. This is a FullHD matrix, made, as you might guess, using Super AMOLED technology with Pentile (reduced number of green subpixels). Pentile is clearly visible due to its peculiar moiré pattern in light areas. However, if you don’t look closely at the screen and don’t know about Pentile, you’ll hardly notice anything: rather, what catches your eye is the richness of the colors and the highest contrast.

The screen remains highly readable even in direct sunlight: at the same time, colors change using a special algorithm: they become completely unnatural, but the contrast increases even more. And this is the most important thing: it is important to at least see something in such a situation, and not try to process the photo for printing.

Software

A proprietary shell is installed on top of Android 4.4 Samsung TouchWiz, which, no matter how much it is criticized, does not greatly change the logic of the interface of the operating system itself. Unlike “bare” Android, there are many improvements here. The most interesting of them are familiar from the Galaxy S4 - for example, the eye tracking function: while you look at the screen, it does not turn off.

There is a multi-window mode: for example, you can split the screen into two parts and display data from different applications in them: browser and email client, YouTube, Hangouts, and so on.

Samsung Galaxy S5 powerful quad-core new product in a thin, elegant case with protection from dust and moisture, the smartphone can also detect fingerprints using the built-in scanner. The smartphone runs on the latest Android 4.4.2 (Kitkat) operating system and is equipped with a powerful 2.5 GHz quad-core processor. Among the new features of the Samsung Galaxy s5, it can be noted that the smartphone is not only waterproof, but also can withstand 30 minutes of immersion in water up to 1 meter deep, and can also detect fingerprints and read the pulse thanks to the heartbeat sensor located on the back of the smartphone. The bright screen of the Samsung GALAXY S5 is increased to 5.1 inches with Full HD resolution with a high pixel density per inch of 432, this is one of the characteristics that particularly distinguishes the smartphone from previous models in this line. The display turned out to be brighter than on the Samsung s4 with excellent viewing angles, is perfectly readable in sunlight and deserves a plus rating. For taking photos, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is equipped with a 16 MP camera with support for LED flash, autofocus and a 2 MP front camera. The Galaxy S5 also shoots high-quality video with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels at 30 frames per second. The smartphone is powered by a powerful battery with a capacity of 2800 mAh, which ensures the operation of the Samsung Galaxy s5 for up to 21 hours in talk mode and up to 390 hours in standby mode, it is worth noting that despite the fact that the phone is protected from water, its battery is removable and plus the ability to turn on if necessary, energy saving mode. From technical Samsung specifications GALAXY S5 can be distinguished by: RAM 2 GB, internal memory 16 GB, support for microSD memory cards up to 128 GB, 4G networks, support for A-GPS/GLONASS navigation, USB 3.0, fingerprint scanner, video recording in UHD 4K 3840 x 2160 format pixels. Samsung Galaxy s5 turned out to be powerful, fast, reliable with numerous functions, built-in sensors, excellent characteristics and a pleasant design.

Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone test: evolution of the leader

Sales of the previous flagship of the Korean manufacturer's smartphone line, the Samsung Galaxy S4, exceeded 40 million units, largely ensuring the company's first place among mobile equipment manufacturers in 2013, which it occupies by a significant margin over its closest competitor. At the same time, it must be recognized that technologically and in its own way Samsung design The Galaxy S4 was often inferior to the flagships of other manufacturers, which did not hinder its sales at all.

Samsung Galaxy S5

A similar fate can be repeated - it received a hardware platform that is not the most powerful at the moment (top-end characteristics are more likely to be expected in the Note series), a fingerprint scanner and water protection, which have already been implemented in other devices. But the combination of all these features and small but numerous software modifications, finally a smart marketing strategy from Samsung, make it a potential hit that could become the most popular Android smartphone this year.

Samsung Galaxy S5 is clearly aimed at becoming a mass device - a large (but not too large) 5.1-inch screen with Full HD resolution, water resistance, an abundance of functions, a removable battery and support for microSD memory cards - the company has done everything to please everyone as much as possible possible number of users. In Russia you can already pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S5 for 30 thousand rubles. Sales of the smartphone should begin on April 11.

Design and ergonomics

Traditionally for Samsung, new flagship It doesn’t have an outstanding design and looks quite simple, practically repeating in appearance last year’s Galaxy S4 model - with rounded corners and a silver edging on the edges. The body is made of plastic, has no metal elements and, of course, does not look as premium as devices from Apple, Sony or HTC. However, we can expect that Samsung will later introduce a “designer” model of the smartphone, as happened with the Galaxy S4 Black Edition and La Fleur. At the moment, four design options for the model are available, differing in the color of the back panel - black, white, blue and, as a tribute to fashion, gold.

Back view

The 5.1-inch screen makes the Samsung Galaxy S5 slightly larger than the fourth model - its dimensions are 142x72.5 mm, and the body thickness reaches 8.1 mm. The weight of the device is 145 grams including the installed battery, so in the hand the smartphone, considering its size, seems quite light.

Bottom edge

An important characteristic of the Samsung Galaxy S5 case is that it is certified to the IP67 standard, that is, it is completely protected from dust and can withstand immersion under water to a depth of 1 meter for at least half an hour. Interestingly, the back cover of the Samsung Galaxy S5, made of rubberized flexible plastic, can be removed, which is very unusual for a device with a declared IP67 protection rating. However, it fits into place very tightly (and the smartphone reminds you to check its installation after each boot). Testing has shown that the smartphone remains operational both under running water and when immersed, which is a big plus for an expensive flagship device. The only consequence is that after “bathing” the touch screen does not respond well to touch for a few seconds.

Top edge

The body of the Samsung Galaxy S5 has the most minimum set control keys. On the left side there is a volume rocker, on the right there is a power and lock button. In color they blend in with the silver color of the edging, but they protrude quite strongly from the body, so finding them tactilely is not a problem and working with them is quite convenient. On the top edge of the Samsung Galaxy S5 there is a standard 3.5 mm audio jack and an infrared port. MicroUSB 3.0 for charging and communication with a computer is located on the bottom edge and is covered with a rubberized plug that protects it from water. On the back cover of the smartphone there is a main camera lens, a unit with an LED flash and a heart rate sensor, as well as a small speaker located at the bottom of the device. Under the panel there is a removable battery and slots for a micro-format SIM card and a microSD memory card with a capacity of up to 64 GB.

Right side

On the front panel of the Samsung Galaxy S5 there is a 2-megapixel front camera, proximity and light sensors, and a traditional touch control unit with a mechanical central button. A big innovation for Samsung was the use of a fingerprint scanner built into this key. Once an account is created on the smartphone with the owner's fingerprint information, the scanner can be used to unlock the phone, log into a Samsung account, and confirm payments. In the test smartphone, the scanning function worked quite correctly - after a short “training” procedure, the system clearly recognized different users. Interestingly, the principle of operation of the scanner in the Samsung Galaxy S5 differs from the iPhone 5S - to recognize a fingerprint using the scanner, you need to swipe your finger from top to bottom, and not just place it on the sensor.

Card slots

The Samsung Galaxy S5 turned out to be very successful in terms of ergonomics - it fits very comfortably in the hand. The 5.1-inch diagonal is a reasonable compromise between the size of the display and the dimensions of the device itself. For such a screen, the body is not very large, mainly due to the small size of the top and bottom frames. Although the smartphone is slightly wider in width than comparable models, perhaps due to the seal needed to protect it from water. However, even those with small hands will not experience any difficulties with the controls - both the screen and the mechanical keys are easily accessible when working with one hand. It’s also nice that the rubberized and perforated plastic of the back panel does not slip in the palm of your hand.

Specifications

The basis of the hardware platform is the new quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chip with a core frequency of 2.5 GHz, created using a 28-nanometer process technology and equipped with an Adreno 330 graphics module. Despite the increase in frequency, its performance is not much different from last year’s Snapdragon 800 model, although and supports faster memory. Also, the smartphone received 2 GB random access memory, which is not so much for a modern top-end device. As a result, in synthetic performance tests, the Galaxy S5 is inferior, albeit very slightly, to the Galaxy Note3 phablet. However, this does not affect everyday work with the device - the smartphone copes well with both work and entertainment tasks, including games that require high performance.

Test results

After some time, Samsung will most likely present another modification of the Galaxy S5, equipped with an eight-core processor, probably the proprietary Exynos 5422, which was announced at the MWC-2014 exhibition. Information about this appeared in Samsung infographics shortly after the presentation of the smartphone. However, the company quickly removed mention of the eight-core processor before officially confirming these plans.

Samsung Galaxy S5 supports Wi-Fi standards a/b/g/n/ac and can work in LTE networks. At the same time, the model implements the possibility of joint operation of Wi-Fi and LTE modules, speeding up the connection to the Internet. The smartphone also has an NFC module and supports Bluetooth 4.0 with low-power protocols BLE and ANT+, so it can work with various fitness trackers and external sensors without any problems.

Working hours

The use of the new chip also had a positive effect on the energy efficiency of the smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy S5 is equipped with a removable 2800 mAh battery, which is fairly standard for modern devices, but good power saving mechanisms allow it to increase its battery life. In the AnTuTu Tester test, the smartphone scored 574 points, discharging to 19% charge in three hours under maximum load. When playing Full HD video with maximum screen brightness, the smartphone discharged to 39% after 7 hours of operation, which is a very good result. In general, during daily work and active use wireless communication You can count on two days of operation on a single battery charge.

Battery test results

Samsung also introduced a new maximum energy saving mode in the model - in it, the display brightness is significantly reduced, the image becomes black and white, and only a small set of applications can be launched on the smartphone. Wireless interfaces and auto-update of data in this mode are disabled by default, but they can be enabled manually. The stated operating time of the Samsung Galaxy S5 in this mode is one day per 10% battery charge, so this is a very useful innovation that allows you not to be left without communication in an emergency.

Display

It uses a 5.1-inch screen with the company’s traditional AMOLED matrix with Full HD resolution. Its pixel density is 432 ppi. The image on the display looks very cool - bright, detailed, with rich colors and good contrast. The screen has wide viewing angles and practically does not distort the image when tilted, and also allows you to easily see the picture even in direct sunlight.

The screen brightness is smoothly adjustable over a very wide range, which makes it possible to set a comfortable backlight in any lighting. Also, the user is given the opportunity to select one of the color rendering modes, including adaptive, which automatically optimizes for a specific application. The list of programs in this mode includes “Gallery”, “Video”, “Books” and several others, but unfortunately does not support third-party applications.

The smartphone perfectly plays video in Full HD resolution and is even capable of handling higher resolutions up to 4K. But the external sound of the Samsung Galaxy S5 did not please me - the small speaker is not suitable for listening to music and only reproduces system notifications well.

Camera

The main camera in the Samsung Galaxy S5 has a resolution of 16 megapixels, and it uses a new proprietary sensor made using ISOCELL technology. Its essence is that individual elements on the matrix are isolated from each other, which reduces crosstalk between adjacent pixels and allows for more accurate color reproduction in the photograph, and also improves its contrast.

Camera interface

In practice, it is difficult to assess the contribution of this technology to the overall quality of images, but the fact that the Samsung Galaxy S5 has one of the best photo modules at the moment is clear. Photos have good detail, accurate color reproduction and a wide dynamic range. Autofocus is very fast - the stated focusing time is 0.3 seconds.

The maximum resolution of Samsung Galaxy S5 photos is 5312x2988 pixels, videos can be recorded in a resolution of 3840x2160. The camera allows you to take pictures in HDR mode, shoot panoramas, take multiple exposure photos, and record slow-motion or fast-motion video. A special section for the camera has appeared in the Samsung branded application store - new filters and shooting modes can be installed additionally.

Software

Samsung Galaxy S5 runs Android operating system version 4.4.2 KitKat and has a pre-installed proprietary TouchWiz interface, which has received many small improvements and effects, in particular, an updated look for the settings menu. The device also uses the proprietary My Magazine update feed, which allows you to create an individual selection of news. The system has several operating modes - children's mode, which limits the list of available applications and actions on the device, private mode, which allows you to hide individual files from other users, and blocking mode, which turns off notifications from people not on the “white list”.

User interface

The S Health sports application is also pre-installed, designed to track physical activity using the smartphone itself or additional external accessories. The functionality of the program includes a pedometer, training support (running, walking, cycling) and heart rate measurement. The heart rate monitor built into your smartphone determines your heart rate using your finger, and, let’s face it, it’s not the most The best way. Even in a calm state, several consecutive measurements gave results from 60 to 80 beats per minute, which indicates a fairly high measurement error. However, this is one of the first examples of using such a sensor in a smartphone, so in the future we can hope for improved accuracy, perhaps even through improvements to the recognition program.

S Health interface

The total internal storage capacity in the test device was 16 GB, of which about 10 GB is available to the user. There is also a version of the smartphone with 32 GB of internal memory. However, support for microSD cards always makes it possible to quickly increase the available space.

Bottom line

It turned out to be a completely typical smartphone from a Korean company - with a discreet design, but very rich in functionality. The model has all the features of a mass product - high, but not maximum, performance, a large set of new, but already tested solutions.

Samsung Galaxy S5. Better, bigger and can swim

IN Galaxy series S Samsung does not experiment, offering users a carefully prepared cocktail of the most popular solutions. Samsung Galaxy S5 has an excellent display, water protection, good camera, a powerful hardware platform, as well as a number of additional features, including a fingerprint scanner and a heart rate monitor - more than enough for this year's flagship. A huge advantage of the Galaxy S5 is that it’s impossible to go wrong when choosing this model - it will suit almost everyone, except perhaps very large screens and maximum productivity. But there are other models for them in the Samsung product line.
