CLOVE GRENADINE – Dianthus caryophyllus var. Grenadine

Biennial flowers stand out among other herbaceous ornamental crops not only because of their long and lush flowering. Their main advantage is that you can start growing from seeds until mid-summer, and do not occupy window sills with seedlings - everything can be done in open ground. Such “convenient” plants include the grenadine clove, which is also endowed with a remarkable appearance, varied colors and a magical aroma. And if you are not yet familiar with this plant, you should definitely find out about it and plant it in your garden. The work expended will be rewarded with long minutes of admiring the flowers and the resulting pleasure from their wonderful smell, and cut into a bouquet they will last in a vase for at least a week.

People fell in love with carnations several thousand years ago and began to grow them near their homes, selecting the best specimens. Much later, in the mid-18th century, some of the cultivated carnations were combined into a separate species called Dianthus caryophyllus. Carnation grenadine is a variety of it, as well as the well-known and very similar carnation Chabot, and the little-known dwarf carnations, American carnations, souvenir de Malmaison.

The Mediterranean is believed to be the homeland of the grenadine clove, but there is no written or other confirmation of this. A perennial in nature, in our country this crop is grown as a biennial, since the most abundant flowering and seed formation is observed in the second year of life. In subsequent years, the number of flowers and the duration of flowering are reduced quite significantly.

DESCRIPTION

Carnation grenadine has a typical appearance for the genus. The height of the bushes varies from 50 to 70 cm. The leaves are opposite, linear, bluish, collected in a rosette up to 30 cm in diameter and partially distributed along straight, thin and gnarled stems of the same bluish-green color.

Fragrant flowers are located at the ends of the stems in several pieces. Sometimes you can count up to two hundred flowers on a bush. Their diameter is from 3 to 5 cm, they can be semi-double, double or non-double. The petals have a whole or finely toothed edge. The colors of the varieties are very diverse - white, yellow, red, pink, lilac, with stripes or a border, there are other options.

After flowering, the carnation forms a fruit in the form of a multi-seeded capsule. In a gram of dry seeds they can be counted about six hundred.

GROWING CONDITIONS

Clove grenadine is highly drought and cold tolerant. It works best in well-lit areas with permeable and nutritious soil. Can also grow in partial shade provided there is 6 hours of sunlight.

It does not tolerate cold and heavy clay soils. They are not as picky about soil acidity as they are about moisture - grenadine cloves cannot tolerate stagnation of water in the soil, especially during the winter when there is a thaw. For this reason, it is better to plant it on an elevated area or on a slope. When planting level, it is important to ensure drainage. If the soil is acidic, it is advisable to liming or add ash. When preparing beds for planting, you need to add organic fertilizers - compost, humus, old manure, as well as superphosphate or ash.

GROWING FROM SEEDS AT HOME

Grenadine carnation is grown as an ordinary biennial - in the first year strong plants are obtained from summer sowing, and in the second year lush flowering is observed. But there are options for growing grenadine from clove seeds. For example, with winter sowing, a more powerful bush will form over the summer than with summer sowing, so next year the flowering will be more abundant. This method is more labor-intensive; moreover, if sowing is very early, seedlings and seedlings will have to be illuminated.

When growing seedlings at home, sowing is carried out from February to the end of March. For better and smoother germination, seeds are treated with contrasting temperatures (stratified) - these recommendations are given for untreated seeds (not colored, not in granules, or collected from their own plants). To do this, the seeds are soaked for 12 hours and mixed with peat crumbs, and then placed in the refrigerator compartment (temperature from 0 to -2 degrees) for 12 hours. After this, the seeds are kept for 12 hours at a temperature of +18-20 degrees. This treatment is repeated until the seeds begin to hatch.

Seedlings are grown from seeds in shallow containers or in pallets consisting of small cells. They are filled with loose and permeable soil with the addition of perlite (15-20%). Seeds are evenly distributed over the surface in containers or one seed per cell. They are sprinkled with a small layer of soil (about 5 mm).

Containers with seeds are covered with plastic, film or glass. The optimal germination temperature is considered to be +16 degrees Celsius. As soon as more than half of the seeds germinate, the shelter begins to be raised for ventilation. Every day the length of time for ventilation increases, and after 4-6 days the film or plastic is removed completely.

After 20 days, the seedlings are planted in pots with a diameter of 5 to 9 cm, where they are grown until the last frost ends (May - June). Afterwards, the grown bushes are planted in the garden bed.

GROWING FROM SEEDS IN THE OPEN GROUND

Growing from seeds in open ground is not particularly difficult, but it does require some knowledge. For sowing in open ground Grenadine carnations prepare beds with loose, permeable, nutritious soil with the addition of river sand (10 to 15%). They are placed in a well-lit place or in openwork partial shade.

Since this type of clove is a cold-resistant crop, sowing occurs 2-4 weeks before the last frost; for central Russia this is the month of May. Later sowing dates are also possible, up to mid-July. The seeds are planted to a depth of about 1 cm, and then the surface is moistened and slightly rolled. To maintain high humidity in the top layer of soil, the beds are covered with agril-type material. During seed germination, the soil should not be allowed to dry out.

A large number of seeds are sown in this way. In amateur floriculture, small packages of seeds are often used, so it is better to sow in a small container or in separate containers for each seed. They are placed in the garden in partial shade or on the veranda. Use special soil (purchased) to avoid clogging with weeds. Otherwise, follow the general recommendations.

The first seedlings appear within a week or 10 days, after which the non-woven material is removed. After 20-30 days, the plants are planted for growing on a growing bed at a distance of 6-8 cm in a row planting, and 15-20 cm are left between rows. For work, choose cloudy weather or evening time. After picking, it is advisable to protect the carnation from direct sunlight for 2-3 weeks. As soon as the bushes begin to grow, the covering material is removed. At the end of summer, the carnation is transplanted into a flower garden and covered with spruce branches for the winter.

In the first year, plants form bushes with a height of 8 to 10 cm and a width of 10 to 15 cm. Developed specimens may have from 50 to 100 vegetative shoots. Carnation grenadine begins to bloom in the second year of cultivation in June-July. Mass flowering lasts about a month, and the total period is up to two months. The seeds ripen in late July or August.

CARE

In order for the Grenadine carnation to bloom profusely and delight with a large number of fragrant flowers, it needs to be fed, watered, weeded and loosened. Sometimes plants may need support to protect them from the wind. To prolong flowering, stems with faded buds are cut off at the base.

Feeding

Feeding is carried out 3 times per season. The first time - 2 weeks after landing or the last pick. Usually 14 days is enough for a young bush to take root and begin to grow. For feeding during this period, use ammonium nitrate and superphosphate or any other complete fertilizer, where the nitrogen content is higher than potassium and phosphorus.

The plants are fed the second time during the formation of buds. For this, superphosphate and potassium sulfate or a fertilizer with a sufficiently high content of phosphorus and potassium are best suited.

The third feeding takes place during the peak of flowering, when the plant consumes a large amount of nutrients. Phosphorus-potassium fertilizers are also used during this period.

Additional feeding may be required if the plants bloom for the second and subsequent times. In this case, fertilizers with phosphorus and potassium are used.

Weeding

Weeding and loosening are carried out regularly as necessary, but it is worth remembering that the root system of the plant is superficial and loosening must be done so as not to damage it. Also, we must not forget that this crop does not tolerate crust on the surface of the earth.

Watering

Although carnation grenadine is considered a drought-resistant crop, it requires regular and fairly intense watering during strong growth and bud appearance. During flowering and seed formation, this need is greatly reduced. Typically, in dry weather, plants are watered once or twice a week.

Collecting seeds

Seeds are collected in the second year of cultivation after flowering in July-August. The fullest seeds with a high level of germination produce well-developed first ripe inflorescences. They are dried in a dry and cool room, then cleaned and stored in paper bags for up to 4 years. The plants grown from them are often not similar to the original variety, since carnations are easily pollinated with related species and varieties. But this often only makes them more interesting.

Carnation grenadine in landscaping and for bouquets

The culture is perfect for flower beds, ridges and other types of flower arrangements. Most often, it is planted in the foreground or middle ground (the second row of plants in the flowerbed) next to ground cover sedums, large-rhizome geranium and other crops.

Cutting for bouquets is carried out in the open flower phase to preserve the best aroma. Flowers cut in buds may not smell after opening.

CLOVE VARIETIES GRENADINE

Grenadine carnation varieties differ from each other in the size and color of the flower, the height of the bush and the timing of flowering. Currently, large Russian agricultural firms selling seeds and other types of planting material, you can purchase, for example, the following varieties of grenadine cloves:

The “Carrot King” variety attracts attention with its beautiful double flowers of a bright red hue with a delicate aroma. The bush, 50 to 60 cm high, is formed by thin, straight shoots with narrow, elongated leaves.
Carnation Grenadine variety "King in Black" is distinguished by the dark brown-reddish-purple color of the inflorescences, which bloom on thin branches from 40 to 60 cm long.
Plants of the “Delight” variety are valued for their fragrant flowers with a diameter of about 5 cm, painted in a variety of shades.
Clove grenadine "Coral" is pinkish-red in color. A large number of flowers are located at the ends of silvery-gray shoots with a large number of leaves.
The “Rose” variety attracts attention with the delicate, pleasant pink color of the inflorescences.
Plants of the "Magic Bouquet" variety (a mixture of colors) reach a height of 50 to 70. Fragrant flowers with serrated petals with a diameter of about 5 cm are painted in a variety of shades.

Today, many flower lovers have turned their attention to the grenadine carnation. And this is no coincidence, because it can compete with many garden flowers in beauty and grace. It is especially popular in its homeland – Holland, where it has been cultivated since the 17th century. There are many new varieties, including species with double flowers. Garden carnations are called Dutch.

It is the garden carnation that is the ancestor of grenadines, which biologists even consider to be a separate species. This flower is not afraid of harsh winters and can withstand drought. But the most beautiful flowers are obtained if you plant the plant in a sunny bed with well-fertilized soil. Flowers prefer rotted manure, black soil, sod-podzolic or loamy soil.

Setting the stage

Flowers can be propagated by seeds or cuttings. Propagation of cloves by seeds is considered effective way, because it is accessible even to novice flower growers.

It is best to plant seeds in prepared greenhouses to obtain early seedlings in mid-April. Plants require fertilized soil. It should include:

  • humus – 5 parts;
  • weathered lowland peat – 5 parts;
  • turf soil - 2 parts;
  • coarse river sand - 1 part.

It is important to know: Cloves grenadine should not be over-watered. Heavy and damp soils do not allow the plant to reveal all its decorative capabilities. In addition, they are a source of disease and even death.

The prepared soil is spilled with a hot, slightly pink solution of potassium permanganate to destroy harmful microspores. The soil should be sufficiently moist before sowing the seeds.

Sowing

Since clove seeds are small, to distribute them evenly in the soil, you need to do this:

  1. Pour the seeds into your palm and fold it into a boat. The seeds will be on the “path” - line.
  2. Take a toothpick and gently brush one seed at a time onto the soil, gradually moving across the greenhouse.
  3. You cannot cover the seeds with a thick layer of soil - no more than three millimeters.

Some gardeners offer a special method of sowing small flower seeds. It is as follows. Clean snow is poured onto the prepared soil, compacted, and then seeds are sprinkled.

They are clearly visible in the snow, making it easy to keep the distance. After a week you can see sprouts.

Gardener's advice: As soon as the first true leaves appear (5-6 pieces), the seedlings need to be planted, planting them at a distance of at least 6 cm from each other.

It is advisable to maintain the same distance between rows.

Planting before winter

Most often, flower growers who have been working with carnations for many years practice sowing seeds in the fall immediately into the soil before frost begins. This is the month of October.

Such crops produce vigorous shoots in early spring, as soon as the snow cover melts. Under no circumstances should such crops be watered. But it’s worth covering young, tender shoots.

There is no need to rely on the fact that the plants are cold-resistant; it is better to cover the sprouts with spruce paws to avoid freezing.

They will protect carnations from daily temperature changes.

At the same time, soil loosening and fertilizing will be required. The best option is special mineral fertilizers for flowers. Repeated feeding occurs in May or June. Before budding, if there is no rain during this period, you need to water the flower beds with carnations with grenadine.

We plant seedlings in a permanent place

Since carnation is a perennial plant, it requires a permanent place. It is better to transplant at the end of July or beginning of August.

It is not recommended to replant at a later date, because the carnation will not have time to take root, therefore, winter will be a severe test for it. Note:

each plant requires quite a large space, so we plant the sprouts every 30-35 cm.

  • First we prepare the soil and water it well. Before watering, add the following fertilizers to the holes:
  • peat – 3 parts;
  • humus - 2 parts;
  • superphosphate - 2 parts;
  • wood ash – 2 parts;

mullein – 1 part.

When the plant takes root, carefully loosen the soil so as not to damage the root system. If it is hot, you will need to re-water.

How to care for plants

Caring for seedlings does not cause difficulties - timely watering and loosening the soil to a shallow depth. At first, it is better to do this with a toothpick so as not to damage the roots.

Grown plants are planted in a permanent place in the flower garden in the second half of May, when frosts can no longer harm them. When planting, the following scheme is observed: at least 20 centimeters between the rows and plants.

But rodents can cause harm. You can save plants from them using spruce spruce branches. Snow must be constantly trampled down to form an ice ridge. Through it, rodents will not be able to reach the plants.

To get good germination and abundant flowering of the grenadine carnation, use the advice of successful flower growers:

  1. For plants to develop well, the soil must be sandy.
  2. To grow a bush with lush flowers, you need special feeding. Mineral fertilizer is added to a 10-liter bucket, which includes nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (3:2:1). Two spoons are enough.

When the buds appear, the cloves need to be fed again. Fertilizer too, but the proportion changes:

  • phosphorus – 3 parts;
  • potassium – 2 parts;
  • nitrogen – 1 part.

About 80 grams per bucket.

  1. Grenadine cloves can withstand drought. So that the plant can wait for its owners, who cannot often visit the dacha, after watering it is necessary to loosen the soil and sprinkle it with mulch.

Varieties

Currently, many amazing varieties of grenadine cloves have been developed. Among them:

  1. Gloria with red double flowers.
  2. Rose Koenigin is distinguished by its terry nature and the aroma of bright pink inflorescences.
  3. Koening des Gelben attracts gardeners with its bright yellow flowers.
  4. Schneeflocke has snow-white flowers.
  5. Russian scientists can be proud of the Northern Lights, Coral, Carrot King, and Rose.

In the second year, the Grenadine carnation reaches a height of 50-60 cm. There are a lot of flowers on it, about 200 pieces. To get a lush bush, pinch the top shoot to allow side shoots to appear. When they grow to 20 cm, they need to be pinched again to make the bush even more magnificent. Do the same with Turkish cloves and shabot.

Whatever type of carnation you choose, the method of growing them is the same. Therefore, there is no need to reinvent the wheel; work with clove grenadine in the same way as with other varieties.

In order for the carnation to bloom for a long time and delight you with its lush buds, you do not need to leave the first flowers on the bushes. They must be cut off.

To obtain your own seeds, you should select double flowers. If there are few flowers on the bushes, then you can use artificial pollination. The deltoid and alpine carnations have the largest number of seeds.

How to grow shabot carnations, watch the advice of an experienced gardener in the following video:

The approach of summer heat makes gardeners think about which plant is best suited for the site. A good option is cloves. Thanks to its chic appearance, this plant is very popular among summer residents, in addition, there are many unpretentious varieties of carnations, which require practically no care. These varieties include the Grenadine carnation - an excellent plant for the harsh Russian climate. More information about growing Grenadine cloves will be discussed in this article.

The carnation variety has not yet gained much popularity among gardeners, but thanks to its aroma and appearance, everything more people They grow this plant on their plots.

Grenadine has a very impressive appearance: silvery narrow leaves growing at the very base, thin and tall stems, as well as lush flowers painted white, red or pink. With careful selection of seeds, you can get a plant that will have 75% terry. Cloves can stand for 7-10 days from the moment of cutting, while saturating the room with their strong aroma. The flowering period of Grenadine practically does not coincide with the flowering of other plants. It begins, for example, at the end of the flowering of the barbatus, and ends with the beginning of the flowering of another equally popular variety of carnation - Shabot.

Carnation Grenadine Northern Lights

The height of the plant bushes is 45-60 cm, and the diameter of the flowers on fertile soils can reach 6 cm. As a rule, the first year the flowering of Grenadine is accompanied by the formation of 7-18 flowers, and in the second year the number of flowers increases significantly (up to 50 pieces). In rare cases, the plant can please the gardener even in the third year. The duration of mass flowering is 30 days.

On a note! Carnation does not really like stagnant water, so it will be much better for it to grow in elevated places. An excellent option for this variety of carnation is a well-lit open area with a slight slope.

Optimal sowing time

If you still decide to decorate your dacha or balcony with Grenadine carnations, then you need to follow the recommendations regarding sowing. It is necessary to sow in the second half of May, no later than the first days of June (we are talking about sowing in open ground). It is advisable to start growing carnation seedlings at the end of April. 7-9 days after sowing, the first plant shoots will appear from under the ground.

Cloves can be propagated not only by seeds, but also by cuttings, although the first method is considered the most effective. In addition, growing flowers from seeds does not require special skills, so even a novice gardener can do this.

First you need to prepare a special mixture, which must include river sand, turf soil, peat and humus. The last two ingredients should be twice as much as the others.

On a note! Carnation Grenadine does not like waterlogged soil, since when growing in damp soil, all the decorative qualities of the plant are not revealed. In addition, excess moisture often leads to the development of diseases and even death of flowers.

When preparing the soil, it must be treated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate to destroy all harmful microorganisms. Make sure that the soil is not too dry before sowing. If necessary, moisten the soil a little with warm water, but do not overdo it.

Sowing seeds

As noted earlier, there is nothing complicated in the process of growing Grenadine cloves, just like in sowing. Every gardener can handle this work; the main thing is to follow the recommendations given in the instructions below.

Table. Instructions for sowing Grenadine cloves.

Steps, photoDescription of actions

Fill a plastic container with the pre-prepared soil mixture. Alternatively, you can skip the hassle and buy a ready-made mixture at the store.

Take a small piece of paper and fold it in half. Then sprinkle the clove seeds from the package onto this sheet.

Gently tap the paper with your finger, scattering the seeds onto the moistened soil. Distribute the seed evenly.

Sprinkle the seeds with a small layer of soil and smooth it out with your fingers.

Water the soil with warm water using a watering can. This can also be done using a spray bottle - this way the seeds will not be washed out. But if you don’t have it at hand, you can use a regular watering can.

Cover the container with the seeds with cling film. If you use a container, just cover it with a lid. You can also use a disposable bag instead of cling film. Sowing is now complete; all that remains is to place the container in a warm place.

Transfer to a permanent location

For normal growth, carnations require a permanent place, because it is a perennial plant. It is advisable to start transplanting in the second half of July, but not later than the first days of August. If you start replanting even a few weeks later, the plant will not be able to take root properly, which will make wintering a real challenge for it.

Important! You need to plant carnations at a decent distance from each other (at least 35 cm), because this plant needs a lot of space.

First you need to prepare the soil and water it well. Before watering, it is necessary to add special fertilizer to the holes, consisting of mullein, humus and peat. All ingredients are added in equal quantities.

Over time, the plant should take root. When this happens, carefully loosen the soil, being careful not to damage the roots of the clove. If it is very hot outside, the soil needs to be watered again.

Aftercare

When growing any cultivated plant, including carnations, it is necessary to regularly remove weeds, apply fertilizers and water the soil. Wilted flowers must be removed, leaving short (up to 12 cm) stems. If necessary, plants can be tied to special supports. As a rule, this is done when growing certain types of cloves with a long stem.

Watering

Remember that carnations do not like waterlogged soil, so they need to be watered moderately, periodically loosening the soil. With the onset of spring, when the snow begins to melt, you need to remove it from the beds, since excess moisture often leads to the development of root rot.

Top dressing

Carnation Grenadine responds well to feeding with humus. If you do everything correctly, you can achieve re-blooming within 30 days. First of all, all faded flower stalks of the plant must be removed, and the soil itself must be well fed.

On a note! Mineral fertilizers with a high potassium content are not recommended for feeding cloves. The same applies to fresh manure, an excessive amount of which can provoke the development of fungal diseases.

Disease and pest control

When growing carnations, watering and fertilizing alone will not be enough. All cultivated plants are susceptible to various diseases and pests, so if you want to decorate your area with bright flowers, you must follow simple but very important rules for caring for the plant. This will protect the carnation from aphids, mites, rot and other troubles. As noted earlier, excess nitrogen mineral fertilizers or waterlogging of the soil are the main causes of fungus. To prevent this from happening, constantly monitor the condition of the soil. If necessary, it needs to be fertilized and loosened.

With the arrival of winter, pest control intensifies. For the winter, cloves must be treated with special pesticides purchased at a garden store. Such drugs include “TMTD” - it will protect plants from rodents. In winter, the carnation should be covered with spruce branches, which do a good job. But, in addition to spruce branches, snow should be compacted tightly around the carnation - this is necessary for safety reasons.

Gardeners also face a new problem: in winter, Grenadine can not only freeze, but also rot. In addition, spruce spruce branches harvested at the wrong time can lead to sunburn on the plant.

Decorative uses of cloves

In landscape design, Grenadine occupies far from the last place among perennial plants. This is an integral attribute of balconies, rockeries, etc. The combination of carnations and roses will create the perfect ensemble when decorating an open terrace or lawn near a country house. If you want to create a rocky garden, decorated in an unusual Japanese style, then lush and bright carnation bushes will help you with this. In addition, such a garden will retain its decorative value for a long time due to the characteristics of the culture.

Carnation - flower of Zeus

When decorating a flower garden, you can use not only a single planting of carnations, but also a group planting - the result will please you in any case. The creation of plant beds should take into account some of the characteristics of carnations, since they do not look ideal with all plants. It is best to use a combination of cloves with crops such as ragwort, gypsophila, kochia, yarrow and so on. These are the most suitable neighbors for Grenadine cloves.

Blue irises will pair well with heavenly or feathery carnations. But at the same time, try to avoid the proximity of Grenadine to tulips, since the latter can harm the carnation by infecting it with various diseases. In addition, chemicals used for carnations may not only not help tulips, but also worsen the situation. You should be careful in this regard.

The green color of a trimmed lawn, of course, has a calming effect on the psyche, but after rest and relaxation, a period of wakefulness and activity is sure to follow, which is why bright flowers are so popular in landscape design, which, even when planted in small quantities, can lift your spirits on the cloudiest day . The approach of summer heat makes gardeners think about which plant is best suited for the site. A good option is cloves. Due to its chic appearance, this plant is very popular among summer residents; in addition, there are many unpretentious varieties of carnations, which require practically no care. These varieties include the Grenadine carnation - an excellent plant for the harsh Russian climate. Who doesn't love cloves, which are still considered a symbol of revolution in France. How to plant Grenadine carnations and care, when to sow seeds, we will consider below.

The best varieties of Grenadine cloves

This is a carnation that blooms in the first year after sowing and can be used as an annual plant. The name comes from the shortened form English words“no vernalisation”, that is, “not requiring vernalization”. Plant height is 40-45 cm, large, non-double flowers of a wide variety of colors.

Breeders have developed many varieties of Grenadine cloves. But the best among them are the following varieties:

  • Carrot King. This variety is distinguished by large double buds and thin straight shoots reaching up to 60 cm in height. The petals of the plant, which emit a pleasant aroma, are painted in a rich bright red color.
  • The King in Black. Carnation Grenadine of this variety is distinguished by the dark brown-red color of its buds with a purple tint. Compact shrub reaches 40-60 cm in height.
  • Delight. A mixture of flowers with different colors is most often sold under this name. Plants reach up to 60 cm in height, and are densely covered with fragrant buds with a diameter of 5 cm.
  • Coral. The variety is distinguished by its compact size and pinkish-red color of the petals.
  • Rose. This variety is valued for the rich pink color of its buds.

Each of these varieties will decorate your flower bed. But for this you will have to make some efforts, ensure proper care and planting of the grenadine carnation.

Sowing Grenadine cloves

Since clove seeds are small, to distribute them evenly in the soil, you need to do this: Pour the seeds into your palm, fold it into a boat. The seeds will be on the “path” - line. Take a toothpick and gently brush one seed at a time onto the soil, gradually moving across the greenhouse. It is advisable to maintain the same distance between the rows.

When are Grenadine carnation seedlings transferred to a permanent location?

Since the carnation we are considering is a biennial plant, it needs to organize an optimal growing location. Readers of Popular About Health should start transplanting seedlings towards the end of July or beginning of August. You should not move plants in the fall, because if transplanted late, they will not have time to fully take root and may not survive the winter. Grenadine carnation grows best in open areas that receive full sun. The best option would be fertile and loamy soil. When grown on damp soil, they may develop fungal diseases. Acidic soil is absolutely unsuitable for growing plants. Also, plants do not tolerate stagnant water. If there is a high level of groundwater in the country, cloves should be planted on a hill. Some types of carnations can also develop on sandy soils, but provided that the soils are cultivated.

Young carnations are planted at intervals of thirty to thirty-five centimeters so that they have enough free space. Before planting, the soil should be thoroughly dug up and watered. Before watering, it is worth adding nutrients to the prepared holes, represented by three parts of peat, two parts of humus, two parts of superphosphate, two parts of wood ash and one part of mullein. After rooting young plants, it is necessary to carefully loosen the soil. If necessary, carry out additional watering. In the year of sowing, the Grenadine carnation forms a bush on which there are several shortened branching shoots.

Fertilizing carnations Grenadine

Grenadine cloves are fed three times a season. The first fertilizing is applied 14 days after planting in open ground or after the last picking. The fertilizer is ammonium nitrate mixed with superphosphate, or any other mixture based on nitrogen with the addition of a small proportion of phosphorus and potassium.

The second feeding is applied during the period when the plant begins to form buds. At this time, it is better to use potassium sulfide in combination with superphosphate or any other phosphorus-potassium mixture.

We fertilize the third time during the flowering period, when the plants will spend a large amount of energy. Fertilizers based on phosphorus and potassium are also used here.

Weeding Grenadine carnations

Weeding and loosening are carried out regularly as necessary, but it is worth remembering that the root system of the plant is superficial and loosening must be done so as not to damage it. Also, we must not forget that this crop does not tolerate crust on the surface of the earth.

Watering Grenadine cloves

Although Grenadine cloves are considered a drought-resistant crop, they require regular and fairly intense watering during periods of strong growth and bud emergence. During flowering and seed formation, this need is greatly reduced. Typically, in dry weather, plants are watered once or twice a week.

For the winter, young Grenadine carnation plants should be covered with a loose layer of spruce branches and dry leaves. In winter, young plants can be damaged by mice. To protect against them, you need to lay out bait and trample the snow around the plantings. Do not rush to remove the shelter in the spring, because during wintering the root system of flowers is greatly exposed. Therefore, let the bushes regain their strength a little after the cold, and only then remove the spruce branches or lutrasil. And also carry out this event in cloudy weather so that the plants do not get burned from the bright rays of the sun.

Seedlings are planted in the flower garden next year in May-June. Particularly valuable varieties of Grenadine carnations can also be propagated by cuttings. Green cuttings are rooted at the beginning of summer (at a temperature of 22 C), and at the end of July - beginning of August they are already planted in a permanent place. For better seed setting, artificial pollination is recommended. The seeds ripen in late July - August; they should be collected as the capsules ripen.

Pests and diseases of Grenadine cloves

Pests dangerous to carnations are nematodes, thrips and mole crickets. They are controlled with insecticides.

Fungal diseases often affect cloves overfed with nitrogenous fertilizers. Waterlogged soil also contributes to their appearance. Most often, carnations suffer from fusarium, rust, mottling and alternaria. Fusarium slows down the growth of bushes and causes the plant to dry out. When rust occurs, small swellings appear on the leaves, and when mottled, blurry spots and veins appear. Most The best way avoiding diseases - proper care. It is better to remove diseased plants in order to preserve the rest of the plantings.

Important! Carnations should not be planted next to tulips. They suffer from the same diseases, but the means to combat them are different. What heals carnations has a detrimental effect on tulips.

Grenadine cloves are less known to amateur flower growers than Turkish cloves, yet they are much more valuable in appearance, aroma, and ease of cultivation.

The flower looks very impressive: the stems are tall, straight and thin. The leaves are narrow, silver in color, located at the base of the bush. Flowers are white, pink, red. And if you carefully select the testes, you can achieve 80 percent terry! The flowers have a pleasant and strong clove scent and stand well after cutting (5 to 10 days). The beginning of the Grenadine flowering coincides with the end of the flowering of the barbatus, and the end coincides with the beginning of the flowering of the annual Chabot carnation. It is convenient that Grenadine blooms at a time when there are few flowering plants.

On fertile soils, bushes grow up to 40-60 cm in height, and the diameter of flowers is from 3 to 6 cm. I noticed that in the first year of flowering, from 8 to 20 flowers are formed on the bush, in the second year - from 5 to 50. Sometimes it gives flowers in the third year. Mass flowering lasts about a month. I plant carnations in an elevated, open, well-lit area with a slight slope to drain autumn and spring waters. Temporary stagnation of water has a detrimental effect on the condition of the carnation, and in low places all plants usually get wet.

To get really good specimens, I cultivate loam, having previously (2-3 years in advance) filled the soil with organic fertilizers: manure, compost, peat, etc. (10-15 kg per 1 sq. m, including 2-3 kg of fecal matter) I sow the seeds in the second half of April in boxes or in an insulated bed, but it is also possible in a simple one. I start planting seedlings on the ridges in mid-June. Distance - 5x5 (even better 7x7 cm). I plant it in the ground from July 20 to August 20 and always with a lump of earth. Before planting, I add 200 g of an organomineral mixture into the hole (peat - 3 kg, humus - 2 kg, superphosphate - 2 kg, wood - 2 kg, mullein - 1 kg). After planting, I water twice (in August and September) at the rate of 0.5 liters of water per hole per watering. This promotes better rooting of plants before the start of winter.

After watering I carry out loosening. Seeds are easy to obtain. But for this purpose, I specifically leave the terry carnation bushes and carefully look after them: I put up pegs, tie the plants to them, water them, loosen the soil around them, feed them, etc. I collect seeds as they ripen - in August and September. Grenadine cloves are heavily eaten by mice at the end of winter. To protect it, I do this: as soon as the ground freezes a little, I cover the carnation bushes with spruce branches or sprinkle them with sawdust to a depth of 5-7 cm. N.N. SMIRNOM
